Hello all, first time poster. I'd like to know where you guys buy your SACD's? In my town there are only two places to buy, BB & CC, and neither have a really good selection. CC only has a few.

A few titles I'd like to get in particular are Roxy Music (Avalon), Michael Olfield (Tubular Bells), and Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Rage Hard).

It seems as though some of these are only available overseas, and they are very expensive. Any good online sources you know of?

Also, I've not heard Roxy Muisic, but want to buy it beacause of all the great reveiws it gets. Anyone care to comment on this CD?

Last, but not least, looking for recommendations on what you guys consider "must have in my collection" SACD's? I listen to virtually any type of music, so long as it's good.

Thanks

There's over 1300 SACDs for sale using the links provided here directly to amazon.com etc. which probably makes this site the largest online! Other specialist sites include Elusive Disc, Acoustic Sounds etc.

So far Best Buy is apparently "it" for my area. The others seem to know what it is; but unless it's a Dylan or Stones "stealth" SACD, they don't have it. That's a very powerful incentive to just click from this site and buy it from Amazon.

I think this points out one of the difficulties that the format is having, and will continue to have: the driving force for music sales is young people. Record companies know this, and market their product accordingly. Most 18-year-olds think mp3 sounds fine; so they're not likely to care about SACD. But this, I believe, is also SACD's greatest opportunity. If the labels could educate the public about the vast sonic difference between SACD and mp3 and CD, they could create demand for a product which they could actually _sell_ instead of having it stolen from them.

Buy.com has just over 300 SACD titles at the moment

Tower Records has just over 500

I see you mentioned Circuit City, their actual in store selection is a total joke. Best buy is close to me, and that's where I get most of my SACDs in person. Best buy started out great by moving SACD and DVD-A into their own section, and getting all the new titles, and then they ran out of steam.

Now the new titles barely seem to be hitting that section. I found Sting's Sacred Love SACD in the regular CD section. There were like 20 CDs, and right in the middle, there was one SACD, you could tell because it is not in a jewel case but the digi pack. They didn't even have the CD or SACD on new music tuesday and they couldn't explain why. All I got was "sting didn't come in, we don't know why". Next new music Tuesday while I was looking for a couple of other discs, I checked again for Sting, STILL no Sting on CD or SACD! I found the discs later that Saturday, like over 10 days...... what a mess.

I had to order Train's -My Private Nation- at Tower, why Best Buy wouldn't carry such a mainstream SACD is beyond me. I'm hoping that 2004 will be much better in terms of availability. I'm getting very tired of running around town, or ordering online and getting stuck with the shipping charges.

Most titles, I get through Amazon.ca (especially most future titles since Stephen has done all the searching for me :D )

I used to get Telarc titles from Telarc.com. But CDUniverse has them for a lot cheaper. I've gotten two or three SACDs from CDUniverse.com. The CDUniverse selection is fairly decent, and their prices on pre-orders are excellent.

I get most of my Universal Classics titles from cdplus.com

I don't really get any SACDs in local stores. HMV is about the only place with a decent selection. But their in-store prices are ridiculous. I've only gotten one or two SACDs at the HMV store.

i've only bought one sacd from a retail shop, - the other three or four dozen have all been bought on the web, - from amazon of course, from ebay (where I've bought a couple from pann) and from mdt (which sells ex-UK at already-good prices less UK sales tax and with very cheap overseas postage). Have also, through both ebay and amazon, made friendly direct contact with z shop owners in both UK and US, - e.g. one in UK who keeps every new sacd he gets for me (Linn and opus3), a great guy in California who does a terrific line in Telarc and pentaphone at brilliant prices and another new UK contact, himself a profesional composer, who has a good deal on Chandos SACDs. I sometimes think that building up the network is half the fun, and a damned sight more pleasure than fruitlessly browsing in retail outlets. And you're buying from real people, - an amateur ornithologist, a record industry drop out, an engineer and so on. Whilst they own e-shops, they're also music lovers/hobbyists.

I went into another retailer today and asked if they had Super Audio CDs. The young female employee was hearing that term for the first time, although her boss knew about them. I think it would be a shame if "we" stopped going into fye and Barnes & Noble and the rest asking for SACDs. If just 10 or 12 people requested them at a given store, that would alert the managers that there was an interest. When people walk into your store intending to buy something which you don't have, believe me, that makes an impression on business-people.

Some good indies up at cdbaby.com and seemingly a better deal than retail prices.

'ello Jack,

Avalon was just released in the US, I saw it on the Tower Records site for $15.99, which pissed me off 'coz I had to pay 23 Euros for it in Germany. But that's life...

Also check out the links provided to amazon.com etc. Amazon has pretty aggressive pricing on current bestsellers.
