Hi
Can someone please say if the new range of Sony (UK) Blu Ray players output DSD over HDMI, or do they convert to PCM first?

Thanks

Read a buyer's review on amazon that states that the SACD sound was not as good as his denon's which had DSD native circuitry because the Sony has to convert to PCM first.

As far as I am aware all Sonys especially their receivers convert to PCM first and they IMO opinion sound better than Onkyo or Denons that have a choice.

Wrong!

The BDPS370 manual states clearly under Audio Settings that you can turn DSD output on or off through the DSD Output Mode. If off, then the output is PCM. It also states that there is no analog output when DSD is turned on.

I did get confirmed a while ago by a knowledgeable person in Sony UK that it can output DSD or PCM, depending on what the receiver needs but I wasn't aware of that last detail you mention. That strongly suggests that the DSD output is 'pure' i.e. not coverted to PCM and back first (and why would it?)

Wait!!!

Sony's Bluray player now can support SACD playback? I must have sleepped over the big news...

BDPS370 site says:
Video Features
DVD+R Read Compatibility : Yes (DL) (+VR) (SACD)

What exactly it means?

My real question is: does it really support multi-channel output? Anyone please confirm this?

Yes, it plays SACD in stereo and multichannel.

Concerning DSD output, the manual says on page 23:

DSD Output Mode:

On: Outputs DSD signals from the HDMI OUT jack when playing a Super Audio CD.
When “On” is selected, analog signals are not output when playing a Super Audio
CD.

Off: Outputs PCM signals from the HDMI OUT jack when playing a Super Audio CD.

You missed it big time. The news was announced during the Las Vegas CES earlier this year. However, only SACD fans noticed these Blu-ray players can play SACD as the main attraction was the availability of 3D Blu-ray playback....which means nothing for me.

The Sony S-X70 series of Blu-ray players don't have analog multi-channel outputs and DSD in its native form can be output thru their HDMI outputs. Just in case you haven't notice, analog multi-channel inputs/outputs are disappearing on both players and HT receivers. The only under USD$300 Blu-ray player that has analog multi-channel outputs is the Oppo BDP-80.

Btw, I got a Sony S-370 directly from Sony for USD$160 shipped about a month ago but have yet to open it.

Regarding analog output while DSD mode is "On", a Sony S-370 owner at the Polk Audio Forum said the analog outputs still works....although he thinks the DSD bitstream is being converted to PCM first before the final analog conversion. Still, he thinks the S-370's SACD performance, while using its analog outputs, is on par with Sony's own SCD-CE595 CD/SACD changer.

Obviously no analog output when DSD is turned on. I am still awaiting a reply to the original question from Sony techincal eu
