Very few music lovers buy SACDs for any such reasons as extended playing time.

I did.

I have limited shelf space so the extended play SACDs were a good idea. I accept that they are 16/44.1 as they weren't hi-rez in the first place. At this stage of the game I am not interested in downloads. Partly because my broadband, here in the country, is not lightning fast and partly because I still like a physical medium. I have downloaded historical recordings that are not available any other way but still transfer them to disc.

Put me down as another preferring physical discs over downloads. Even CDs over downloads, hirez or otherwise. I view downloads as an overpriced throw-away medium, great for music producers but less so for consumers. Things may change but discs don't look like disappearing anytime soon.

Classical CD sales are dropping dramatically worldwide.

Says who? According to the latest stats, classical CD sales (volume) in Germany are *UP* 23% in 2009 compared to 2008:

Maybe the US market is different, but then as Oscar Wilde said: "America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilisation inbetween."

From the same German reference:

In Germany (2009):
CD sales (physical): 93% of ALL music industry sales
Digital sales: 7 %

The vast majority of those 7% downloads will be SINGLES sales (which are a success for downloads, whereas albums downloads don't sell). And since the classical market is predominantly albums (not singles) .... it would appear that the download market for classical ALBUMS is basically non-existent, most likely around 1% of classical sales.

Sorry about my sloppiness ,not adding a source for my statements.

Thing is I have forgotten where I got my facts from.

But I think the figures were for international sales and general trends ,and not only in the USA.

But I could be wrong there.

Oscar Wilde, on the other hand was of course, spot on in his comment.

I guess we Americans must accept this as authoritative since Mr. Wilde was an acknowledged expert on decadence.

It's very strange that so many foreign countries and Arab emirates have gravitated towards Western Civilization while even British Films continually mock the arcane "civility" of their own stuffy rituals. Get a grip? Barbarianism is a British Export! Off with their heads.........And BTW, I own this wonderful Mendelssohn extended~play RBCD SACD and I have posted before that both the performances and recording are well worth the purchase price. Four Hours and Fifteen minutes on a single disc. Has Robert gone green?

I wrote an article in the January/February 2009 Issue of PFO about BIS' Ultra Extended Playing Time SACDs.

On that subject, I have a couple of Audite recordings with ~150 minutes on the SACD layer, although they seem to be demonstrating their remastering process rather than providing us with extra music.

I want to be sure no one thinks I was supporting the following statement, which although taken from the article cited above, equivalent statements have been made elsewhere (I am not singling out Ms. Goodwin on this):

>

Other than the fact that the playback may take place through a different DAC chip (and low-pass filter), I don't see any reason to believe that the quoted statement could be true. Over in the digital signal processing world where we develop the products that make digital music playback possible, no one pimps "upsampling" as a technology.

Upsampling is a word straight out of marketing and advertising hype -- the term is resampling. I don't know if it is mentioned elsewhere on sa-cd.net, but this article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_rate_conversion ) is conceptually correct and the author makes it clear that there have been a simplifications in his (?) explanation. I would think that everyone could read and understand it, which is the goal.

For all the DSD purists (I read the long interchange between Ms. Goodwin and Mr. von Bahr), here is something to worry about: As hardware advances, playback of DSD data is and will more often be done by converting the DSD data to LPCM and //then// piping it through the usual DACs and filters that apparently the DSD purists have a reason to dislike. It will all be done in one chip. If you have an AK4396 "miracle DAC" chip, it is quite likely already happening.

These performances have been in heavy rotation on my DirecTV satellite classical station for some months now. They pop up quite frequently there.
