On the flip side, I cant stand that 4D sound thing they tried resulting in a dissapointing soundstage for the Pires Chopin Nocturnes.
That is a strange sounding recording, isn't it? Sort of "distant." I doubt that's the result of the 4D recording process, though. There's nothing particularly experimental about 4D, from what I can tell. It's mostly about reducing analogue signal runs. I'm sure it's stuff that most people do now as a matter of course, which is why it would be odd for DG to keep boasting about it.

That's right,4D refers to four new (at the time) pieces of equipment:
1. remote controled mic pre-amp (can be placed close to mike because of remote control)
2. digital-floating A/D (allows for greater wordlenght)
3.Stagebox principle/digital network (mike preamp and A/D in one unit on the stage, digital network to the studio)
4. all digital mixing process
so all that 4D means, is that an all digital recording chain at hi res is used. The sound itself is only determined by how the system is used.
By the way, point 4 is the reason why we are not seing DSD recordings from DG.

The subject has often come up about DGG pretty awfull sounding Karajan Discs especially when he himself had a say in the sonics...which was pretty near most of the time.....One comment was made once that he had to have his face on the cover of any discs issued and each performance of his band was his interpretation...
Er, actually Karajan strongly preferred his face NOT to be on the cover of his records, as Osborne's biography makes clear - he did take a lot of care with what image appeared on LP covers, e.g. the then-recent NASA shots on the cover of his 1964 Also Sprach Zarathustra.
