I am glad that "Amaldo" found so much to enjoy. I recently received this disc from Analogue Productions and, since the disc plus shipping set me back almost $40.00, I wish that I could concur. I am sorry that I can't. In my opinion, this disc does not compare favorably with many other recordings of these pieces. Most notable, in my opinion, are; Reiner and the Chicago Symphony ( BMG/RCA 3 channel sacd), Jarvi and the Cincinnati Symphony (Telarc multi-channel sacd), Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra (Reference Recordings 2 channel hdcd), Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra (Telarc 2 channel sacd), and many others. These pieces are VERY well represented in the recorded repertoire. One element of this disc that I did find VERY interesting is Night On Bald Mountain. This performance was orchestrated by Maestro Leibowitz and has some VERY interesting orchestral and tempo effects including a wind machine. I am not trying to say that Pictures is not a good performance or recording. it is a very good recording, It is, in my opinion, over-shadowed by others.

I am sorry that this post appeared here. I intended it to appear on the review board with "Amaldos" post. I tried to delete it but, that doesn't seem to be allowed.

Steve you were in the right place on the product page but clicked the wrong thing. To add a review click the yellow oval that says "Add Review", you accidentally clicked start discussion. Oops.

I can't imagine why you had it there in any case - it's not a modern DSD recording.

In my experience, the older recordings sound far more natural.

Does anyone know how this stupid album title came about? Was this meant to appeal to audiophiles?

More Readers' Digest (those excellent CDs on Chesky) and RCA - in the same mould as "Witches Sabbath", "Pops Caviar", "HiFi Fiedler".....
