If you had to pick a "most wanted to be released on SACD" wish list (3 items), what would they be? Just curious what everyone else dreams about.

Verdi: Rigoletto Sutherland/Pavarotti/Milnes LSO, Bonyninge (Decca)

Beethoven: the Piano Concertos Brendel/VPO, Rattle (Philips)

Bach: Suites for Cello solo Rostropovitch (EMI)

Tchaikovsky Syms 4, 5, 6 - Mravinsky / Leningrad
Bach Harpsichord Concertos - Pinnock / English Concert

Jeff Buckley - Grace (There's a remastered Deluxe Edition, too bad they didn't add an SACD Layer)

Oasis - Be Here Now (1 million instruments at once, SACD would be great to add some resolution)

Radiohead - All Albums (it's a must), Good for a Surround Mix

Coldplay - All three albums, see Radiohead

Jimi Hendrix: all three Jimi Hendrix Experience studio albums, First Rays..., Band of Gypsies

Stevie Wonder: that great string of 70s releases from Where I'm Comin' From to Songs in the Key of Life

Van Morrison: everything from the 70s and 80s

Stan Getz/Luiz Bonfa: 'Jazz Samba Encore' is one of my all time faves of that unique "Getz" sound.

Jennifer Warnes: 'Famous Blue Raincoat' is a fantastic cover of Leonard Cohen material as well as a first class recording. Right now I have the Classic Gold CD which is a superb re-mastering.

Traffic: 'The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys'. An engrossing and captivating performance with first class sonics. This would surely shine on SACD.

dear monteverdi, do you mean the Britten-conducted version on Decca? If not, then Chandos have a terrific Multi-Channel recording in the form of their SACD remastering of their already-fine 1991 recording with Hickox, the LSO and LSO Chorus. It comes on a two-SACD set with fine performances of the Sinfonia de Requiem and the Ballad of Heroes. The soloists are a star studded group of Heather Harper, Philip Langridge, Martyn Hill and John Shirley-Quirk. IMHO, it's every bit as good as Britten's own version, - less neurotic intensity perhaps but much better singing, not just in the soprano and tenor roles but also from the Chorus. Good old Penguin Guide agrees with me (or vice versa) saying that "Hickox's version rivals even the composer's own.... in its passion and perception.....golden toned...fearless...sesitive...subtle...unrivalled force...exceptionally fresh". The Britten version, whilst it has many fine moments is let down - at least musically - (IMHO) by the Russian warble of Vishnevskaya and sonically by a fair degree of hiss (on the RBCD). Only thing I'm not sure of re. the Hickox/Chandos is the resolution on SACD as Chandos are coy about thether they recorded originally in 16 bit or 20/44.1 or 48 or 92. Sounds great, all the same.

I do mean the Britten conducted version. As much as I also have enjoyed Hickox on Chandos, I do have a strong attachment to the composer's recording and the splendid analog sound. I see that Decca has offered a remastered version in 96/24 as they have done so with several classic opera recordings.

I know it's cheating but I've gone for four groups of three NON-CHORAL (now how's that for restraint???!!) and analogue recording re-releases from the core repertoire. I've avoided any DDD recordings in 16/44.1 (sadly) as well as recordings which I suspect won't be released e.g. Kovacevich playing Mozart 21 and 25 (which pentatone don't have m/c masters of and which Universal have ignored to date in their Japanese releases).

Group 1 Opera

Beethoven Fidelio EMI Vickers et al/Klemperer
Mozart Don G EMI Giulini
Mozart Zauberflote EMI Popp et al/Klemperer

Group 2 Symphonic/Orchestral

Brahms Symphony no. 4 DGG Kleiber
Strauss Four Last songs EMI Schwartzkopf
Nielsen Symphonies 1-6 Sony NYPO/Bernstein

Group 3 Concerto

Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 4 EMI Gilels/Ludwig
Brahms Piano Concertos 1 & 2 DGG Gilels/Jochum
Brahms Violin Concerto Philips Krebbers

Group 4 Chamber & Instrumental

Beethoven Waldstein/Appassionata Sonatas DG Gilels
Beethoven Late Quartets Valois Vegh Quartet
Shostakovitch Viola and Violin sonatas Melodiya Oistrakh et al

Sorry, Brenda, but I think your EMI choices are a lost cause, even if I personally agree with most of the performances you've selected. I presume you're referring to the Schwarzkopf/Szell "Four Last Songs" -- a Desert Island disc indeed. Ditto with the Klemperer "Fidelio" and Giulini "Don Giovanni".

I haven't read or heard any mention of EMI showing any interest in SACD. Have you?

EMI did some fantastic recordings, would be nice to see some of their SQ releases get the SACD treatment. Sadly though, you're about right...
