Hi,

I'm interested if anyone has any views on the Kindertotenlieder piece on this SACD. Ive noticed there are three reviews which are all pretty complimentary, but mainly talk about the 3rd Symphony. I have the 3rd with Boulez, which i'm happy with - i know many others are not. So i'm asking, since this seams to be the only sacd recording of Kindertotenlieder, should I pay £25 just for the song cycle?

Cheers

dear tony, i haven't got this version of the 3rd myself (my only 3rd is Haitink on an old Philips set) but am always interested in singers and recalled a review on amazon.uk which went into detail on the K'lieder. I've just checked and it's still there. Won't quote it but the gist of it was that the soloist, in the reviewer's opinion, started a bit wobbly but got progressively better and overall makes a fine contribution. However, s/he (?) went on to say that more than that is needed in K'lieder and strongly recommended Brigit Fassbaender with Chailly. I can't comment on that recommendation as I haven't heard that version either. Overall judgement was "decent songs". Full review on amazon.uk under Mahler 3/Thomas/SFSO or Mahler 3/Avie (label).

Hi Tony,
I have this set and the performance of the Kindertotenlieder is very disappointing. Michelle DeYoung is unsteady and forces her voice, at times, throughout these 5 songs. This is a pity as the orchestral accompaniments and recording quality are excellent. There are many outstanding performances of this work on RB CD; the wonderful Fassbaender version referred to by Brenda is a world away from this one.
As far as the symphony goes I have MTT, Chailly and Boulez. If I had to keep just one it would be Boulez.
Save your £25,unless you are a serial collector of Mahler 3s!

What I'd love to see is Sony releasing the Bernstein/NYPO recording of this symphony on SACD -- although I'm not going to hold my breath, knowing its current attitude towards the format.

I have first with Bernstein/NY Philharmonic on SACD, if you dont yet own it i strongly suggest you give it a try - the quality is a amazing for a 1966 recording and the performance is excellent.

While we're moaning about Sony, i'd like to see the Samuel Barber works with Thomas Shippers on SACD - now that would be something.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing awhile back. Another good old Columbia recording would be MTT's Carmina Burana. Remember that one? It may be in Quad as well. Somewhere at my parent's house is the Mobile Fidelity Sound lab remastering of this one on Lp. I wonder how much *that's* worth....

Actually I'm not a fan of all of the Bernstein/Sony Mahler series. I didn't care for his fifth, for instance. However, I believe his 3rd is really special and I also like his "Symphony of a Thousand" with the LSO, but the recording is terrible amd I don't believe anything would improve it all that significantly.

The 5th is probably the least of the CBS cycle, which is strange since the 5th is probably the best of the DG cycle
