I read that these were mastered at Super Audio Mastering in the U.K.. They have mastered many sacd's over the years and I bet they would have been sacd had it not been for the fee's associated with sacd production and licensing.

And don't forget that Dark Side of the Moon was announced as a DVD-Audio and Sony bribed EMI to release it in sacd........divine retribution. But Steve Wilson's mixes should not disappoint (witness his mixes for Porcupine Tree) And one website has listed is as a full-blown DVD-A and not dts or DD. But we've been F**KED before [excuse my venacular].

The DVD-Audio format was chosen because it is the format the Steven Wilson works with (Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, solo efforts, etc.) He is the mix/master for the King Crimson 5.1 releases so that is THE format. I bet it haas nothing to do with Sony, Atlantic or anything else. Concur with above, his stuff in 5.1 is phenominal and rivals anything I have in SACD.
Because the remasters are from Steven Wilson, you can be assured they will be true DVD-Audio and not just Dolby and/or DTS.

Hmm, his own records, at least his new one are in 48/24 PPCM only. I fear that is witll be the same with the KK releaes.

I would not put too much emphasis on the numbers. If it sounds good - that's all that matters. Have you listened to any of the (5) Porcupine Tree albums in 5.1? If not, then don't be too fast to pass judgement.

However, what remains to be seen (for me) is how much better a 40 year old recording can actually be made to sound. I have the recently remastered first KC album (cd version of course) and it sounds pretty good, even great for the time. Still sounds like an older recording though.

I love my SACDs, and where I have duplicity I think they sound better than their DVD-Audio counterpart. Beck and EJ for example. Not sure if that is the format, or how it was mastered, or just me. However, I do not think any of my 50+ SACDs have better sound quality than ANY of my PT discs. I think Steven will create the best listening experience possible. If you can play DVD-Audio, and most of us have the ability to play both, suggest you get in line for these releases. You will see me at the front!

I'll throw my two cents in for what it may for worth. I concur with Universal Mike that the PT dvd-a discs sound awesome. I have five of them and Steve Wilson's recent solo effort, all of which show his skill at maximizing the benefit of high-def audio and mixing for surround. I'm extremely hopeful that he is able to carry this over in the KK hi-rez releases.

Supposedly a reviewer at Sound & Vision has heard RED and LIZARD's 5.1 DVD-A remasters and said "You will definitely NOT be disappointed."

What are the five PT surround releases?. I know of Lightbulb Sun, great, Stupid Dream, great, and In Absentia, gave away. Damn hard to find the bomus tracks on those discs though. I'm looking forward to the King Crimson releases.

well, Deadwing and Fear for a Blank Planet, I think the best of PT, excellent surround mixes in high res.

For 51Surr, They do seem to get progressively heavier. If you don't like "In Absentia" because it rocks harder, you may not like the latter two. However, they are all different in their own way and none should be discounted because of another. Listening to the contributions from Robert Fripp and Alex Lifeson on FOABP is pretty cool. Instantly recognized the "Rush" sound on Alex's guitar solo.

The latter 3 were intentionally recorded with 5.1 in mind, the earlier two were remixed later. Not sure that makes any difference, other than to prove Steven knows how to remix (very well) something not originally planned for 5.1. Drumming on the last three is crazy good, by the way. Gavin is one of the best in the world.
