Blasphemy! You should NEVER mention DVD-A on a site dedicated to SACD! :-)

Some people have very strong feelings about this... you're hurting their feelings...
It's only a matter of time before they start shouting.

Run! While you still can!... :-)))))

Well at least DVD-Audio is high resolution and many of us own Universal players. I do like DSD and SACD better but if it's something not available on SACD, DVD-Audio is the next best option. The problem for 2 channel listeners is the requirement for a TV screen to select the high resolution 2 channel stereo program. In the DVD realm I prefer 24 Bit 96kHz stereo DVDs as they do not require using the menu.

I firmly believe all high resolution should be supported including high resolution 24 Bit 96kHz downloads. Most non-audiophile record companies do not think enough of us care about sound quality, we have to prove them wrong and in high enough numbers that every future recording released is available in high resolution.

I agree,

although I prefer DVD-A(MLP) to DAD 24/96, but my first choice is of course DSD/SACD - it is best sounding digital format available on the market IMO, and the number of SACD titles surpasses all other high resolution audio and video formats titles put together, dvd-audio titles, FLAC 24/96 downloads, DAD 24/96, Blu-Ray video titles, HD-DVD video, HRx etc sum it up and you still can't touch SACD!

but DVD-A of course sounds several orders of magintude better than RBCD or pseudo high resolution XRCDs http://puresuperaudio.blogspot.com/2009/01/hi-rez-demystified-are-there-high.html

BTW. Is the DVD MCH mix DTS or AC-3?

I'm pretty sure it's plain Dolby Digital 5.1

You don't have to convince me - I own quite a lot of DVD-A discs. As a rock listener I could even say that many of the albums I own on DVD-A are closer to my soul than most of the titles in my SACD collection. This includes the 2 Yes DVD-A titles available on DVD-A - "Fragile" and "Magnification".

I just remember that DVD-A related discussions caused a lot of strong reactions on this site in the past.

For some people saying "DVD-A" on a SACD site is just like saying "bomb" on a plane!... :-)

I have for example Rolling Stones Let it Bleed on SACD, Deep Purple - Machine Head DSD, Pixies - Doolittle, Moody Blues - A Question of Balance ..and what can I say, SACD really rocks :)

PS I'm waiting on Paranoid...

So am I. I do not have a DVD-A capable player yet so I don't own any DVD-As but if my next machine is a Oppo's universal player am I supposed to pass on Santana in MCH just because it is in DVD-A and not SACD?

For me it is all about music and not that much about standards especially since we know how many SACD titles were dereived from hi-rez PCM or mixed in hi-rez PCM...

Santana, Eagles, Beatles, Seal, Alan Parson Project, Queen to name a few titles only available in hi-rez MCH DVD-A only...

I never said there weren't any rock titles available on SACD - there are much more than what you listed.

On the other hand, the Doors discography, Metallica's Black Album, the 5 Porcupine Tree titles available on DVD-A ... I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have missed those for the world!
And they all are amongst my favorite albums available in MCH Hi-Res... It's a matter of personal preference, of course!

At the risk of prolonging the off topic content - I don't have any issue with DVD-A. It's dead and unlikely to ever come back to life.

Queen - A Night at the Opera and the underestimated (due to an unduly negative High Fidelity Review review) Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom both sound brilliant.

I did not know there was Eric Johnson on DVD-A. Now I have another reason to get an Oppo! Satrianin on SACD and Johnson on DVD-A. Cool. My loyalty is to music and not any specific medium.

Among all Trevor Horn work the album I've been longing for most to hear as multichannel SACD is ABC's The Lexicon of Love. The Deluxe edition of TLoL that Universal released a few years ago (as part of a large series in which various titles including The Moody Blues, Elton John and Nine Inch Nails did have an SACD) was the perfect opportunity but someone must have decided otherwise. I'm sure Trevorn Horn would have been interested in doing it.

It looks like I'll have to resort to ABC's DVD-Video compilation album 'The Look of Love' to hear some of this work remixed in 5.1

Coincidentally, there's some great news this week:

ABC will perform 'The Lexicon of Love' live in its entirety, together with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Anne Dudley and with an introduction by Trevor Horn, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, April 8th 2009. I wonder if this time it will be properly preceded by the 'Overture'. On the Deluxe edition it's included but, oddly, with the other bonus tracks _after_ the main album.

It sounds like a great opportunity to make another interesting multichannel recording of this album for SACD (and generate some more attention for SACD and for the album, plus a great occasion to release a multichannel mix of the original album on SACD after all) but I think a DVD-Video or at best a Blu-ray Disc of the show is more likely.

Then again on the other hand they never even bothered to release the 'Mantrap' video movie on DVD. I've had to make my own bootleg DVD from a LaserDisc transfer.

Still, it sounds extremely exciting. I'm actually thinking of going there. Is anyone else planning on going?
