I admit to a preference for the Kertesz recording over the more recent Jarvi Telarc recording. Having said that if you want a 9th to really grab your attention try the 1960 Paul Paray/Detroit SO version on Mercury recently re-issued by Archivmusic. I would pay top dollar for that performance on SACD in 3 channel!

If you read your comments again, Teresa, you don't imply or explicitly state that it was the VPO recording you had on tape. Read your comments again or didn't you know Kertesz recorded the 9th twice?

Here are your comments:

I went a different way. I have the wonderful Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra version on Telarc PURE DSD SACD Dvorak: Symphony No. 9, Martinu: Symphony No. 2 - Paavo Järvi which replaced my Kertesz 4 Track 7 1/2 IPS Stereo Reel to Reel version. I liked the Järvi better than the Kertesz as I explain in my review. Also the Järvi includes a superb version of Martinu's Symphony No. 2. On the Esoteric SACD you get only the New World Symphony for your $59.98.

Those comments do not come close to saying it was the VPO 9th you are referring to.

ROFLMAO indeed. Grow up.

I know Kertesz recorded Dvorak's 9th twice, in fact he recorded all 9 of Dvorak's symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra. The Vienna Philharmonic Version was such an early recording that it lists "The New World" as No. 5. Four additional Dvorak symphonies were discovered and the order of the symphonies were changed and the old No. 5 is now No. 9. Both of Kertesz's versions are excellent although I do prefer the Vienna version. However it's Jarvi I prefer both musically and sonically over any of the several dozen Dvorak Ninth's I've heard. I am a big Dvorak fan!

I can't help it I have to laugh when you say something funny.

Then you have rejected probably the best recording of the 9th ever. The Kertesz is a classic recording, the Jarvi can't hold a candle to it...ever! To even mention them in the same breath is laughable.

Agreed... although I might be skeptical of this surpassing my vinyl.

Have you tried any of the other titles, and did you have to call the telephone number found at the beginning of this thread?

Didn't try the others, don't have the money (didn't really have it for this one) and I got mine through musicdirect.

I wish they did Paray's Schumann in SACD.

Teresa,

If you're the one who didn't recommend this disc, I call unfair use of the recommending system. You don't have this disc and you shouldn't have any right to comment on the sound and performance unless you do have it.

So what's the latest news on these Esoteric releases? Has there been any movement towards sanity; i.e. reducing the absurd prices and have overseas outlets shown any increased interest in stocking them?

I can see this entire venture becoming a dead duck very quickly unless common sense prevails.

It wasn't me I only recommend or not recommend SACDs I have actually heard. If the Jarvi didn't exist and this was priced closer to $20 I might have tried it.

I cannot comment on the sound but the performance is the exact same one as on my 4 Track 7 1/2 IPS Reel to Reel the Jarvi SACD replaced. I think it is a great performance BTW, so there is no way I would not recommend it even though I like the Jarvi better. Kertesz's VPO is my second favorite performance of Dvorak's 9th so If I was rich and able to afford it, it surely would have gotten my recommendation.

It was someone else who didn't like it.

Yes, if no place like hmv.jp picks it up at its 3300 yen selling point, but it is no pricier than some Exton in Japan. Again, the cd price is set for the Japanese market. They aren't thinking of us in the US, Australia, or Europe. To a Japanese hi-rez consumer, 3300 isn't much.

It's the price gougers in the US and Europe that are making the dough on this. They are the ones who are trying to make as much as possible.

It's such a classic performance in excellent sound I couldn't resist. I ordered it tonight from MusicDirect.
