According to the Bruckner.com web site, Osmo Vanska is undertaking a complete Bruckner cycle for BIS with the Minnesota Orchestra - exciting news for Bruckner enthusiasts. No information on release date is posted at this time.

Perhaps Bissie could fill us in on release plans.

How many ongoing or completed Bruckner cycles are there on SACD now? Vanska, Janowski, Young, Rogner, Wand, Asahina, Bosch, van Zweden, Nézet-Séguin, Luisi, Guttenberg, Haselböck ....actually I am not certain about Haselbock and Guttenberg.

Now how many Sibelius cycles do we have? And the greatest contemporary Sibelian of all is doing a BRUCKNER cycle? phew! Would that it were otherwise. I guess that's like saying: "Would that Julia Fischer had stayed with PentaTone!" or "Would that instead of all that Mozart for PentaTone, Fischer had done the Bartok, the Dvorak, the Shostakovich, the Beethoven, the Elgar and the Mendelssohn."

Bissie, for crying out LOUD! Wouldn't Nielsen be a much better bet? I would jump on that as fast as I would a Sibelius cycle. IMHO Bruckner seems exceedingly very well covered at the moment.

Bring on the Bruckner, Bissie!! If they're SA-CDs, I'll collect them all!!

I don't understand why everything needs to be a complete cycle. Why not just do 7-9, and maybe 4 and 5?

Is really one really dying for more recordings of the Bruckner symphonies, let alone 1-3?

If Vanska make for Bruckner what he does for Beethoven, it's a wonderful new and I'll buy them all.

Why should we have always complete cycle for Beethoven and not for Bruckner, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Schubert etc... ?

I understand your vent, and I too would be thrilled with a Nielsen cycle. But of the conductors you've listed above, the only one whose Bruckner interests me is Wand (and maybe Janowski and Luisi if they actually have cycles) , so I for one am thrilled with this news!

Bring it on!!

Now that Vanska's Beethoven symphony cycle is completed, with the excellent accounts of 2 & 7, I was wondering which symphonies he was going to look at next.
The Bruckner is not what I would have liked him to record: not a favourite composer of mine and there are plenty of other ongoing Bruckner cycles on SACD.

The Nielsen would have been much better but realistically cannot be expected. Why should he re-record the Nielsen if he is satisfied with his last cycle?
Also BIS have 2 Nielsen and 2 Sibelius cycles on RBCD but almost no Bruckner.
An SACD Sibelius or Nielsen cycle from BIS seems unlikely, it would not appear to make economic sense for them.
I expect more mainstream works such as Brahms, Mahler, Dvorak, maybe even VW from BIS to fill the gaps in their catalogue, plus the less well recorded composers such as Aho.

Well, that was a lot of feelings in one go!!

Facts are, when I tried to get to the bruckner.com website, I land at some machine inventory company or whatever.

The only comment I can make at this time on the subject-matter is that I am not entirely pleased to read things about forthcoming projects on BIS, of which I had absolutely no idea!! OTOH, I am happy for the attention that BIS carries...
Yes, we will be doing the 4th. Last time I looked, the 4th is rather less than a Complete Cycle.

Thanks. Should have thought of that myself.
Well, I really don't know whence they have that. Not from BIS, that's for sure.
