It's going the wrong direction.
First Hyperion, now this.
BAD OMEN.

With the idiotic notion of releasing double inventory at different prices, this is the only way the development can go. Even though I am an interested party, I have to add that this all points to the necessity to support those - fewer and fewer - labels that release SACD:s as Hybrids at no extra cost - to the consumer, that is... We may be interested in the music and artistry, but we also have to count beans...

The LPO label has only released 5 SACDs, so this is not such a big deal.

BTW, the poor selling Britten disc mentionned in the article is single layer. It is also unavailable in the LPO store and in the stores listed on this site. And then they complain about having too many discs in stock ...
Britten: War Requiem - Masur
LPO should not be confused with the other London orchestra, releasing on the "LSO Live" label, which has been (and still is) more active in terms of SACD:

Puzzled by Claude saying the Britten is unavailable from the LPO shop on their web site. I was able to find the SACD version as well as the RBCD version. It is also available from Amazon.co.uk and Crotchet from this web site.
However, this discarding of SACD releases by the LPO label was almost inevitable. Each of the discs released, I believe, is drawn from live performances and comes complete with audience participation and to me this makes them uncompetitive. I would consider an RBCD before buying an SACD with audience noise and applause.
I wonder how many RBCDs of these releases have been sold? This could be a general cost cutting excercise because the label is not selling many of any format type.

I am inclined to agree. The LPO releases have not been as consistent technically nor artistically as the LSO ones. It is a fine orchestra and with Jurowski in charge could have produced many fine discs but there seemed not to been any artistic vision for the label. A confusing set of releases some historic and some new without a clear distinction between them. As I recall there was a lot is misinformation in advance of the War Requiem release from the retailers as to what was being released.
I have the impression that the Chicago Symphony releases may be going the same way. Some RBCD, some SACD, some with DVDs added but none of it clearly stated in advertising and discs announced but not appearing for many months. The consumer ends up frustrated and probably has dropped the disc from the want list by the time it does hit the shops. This is a mistake that the neither LSO nor the Halle have made.
It will be interesting to see how the Philharmonia issues with Signum fair.Shame they won't be SACDs.

Indeed it is available on amazon.co.uk and .co.jp. But on .de and .fr it is only available from Marketplace sellers. The Crotchet page does not load on my PC, and on the LPO shop I can't get past the first page.
Anyway, the biggest selling issue with this disc is that it is single layer. Even those who have a SACD player might prefer the CD version for it's compatibility.

I bought the Mark-Anthony Turnage SACD (LPO-0007). Intriguing music, excellently played and recorded. That's the only LPO SACD I have.
