An image of Disc 1 of Mahler 6 SACD (above) took this with my webcam.

Several weeks ago I purchased one of the great recordings by Michael Tilson Thomas on SACD. Mahler Symphony No.9 It very quickly, under normal use, developed a crack from the center hole out. Now I have the Symphony No.6 which I got in the exchange for the Symphony No.9. I live in Canda and bought the disc from chapters book store.

Now it has been several weeks since I bought this SACD and it too has developed two small cracks going outward from the center holes. The plastic of this SACD is very thin I must admit.

I did send an email to SFSymphony site asking if it was possible to get an exchange. I don't think my local store would allow for another exchange, since I have had this SACD a few months.

I sent the email a few days ago and have not heard a reply from the SFSymphony Store. There is also no toll free number to call the store from Canada. It doesn't appear that they will address issues with those who buy merchandise that is not online.

Has any else got any advice on this? Having a cracked SACD, even if it isn't near the area of the disc with the data doean't inspire one with confidence in the product. The sad part is I just ordered Symphony No.5. Will this SACD crack too?

Believe me, I treat my discs gently.

I don't have any of the SF Symphony Mahler discs but I have had SACDs with spindle cracks, but it's been a few years. Were these my any chance pressed by "Crest" in the USA? If so Crest had a problem with spindle cracks which is now supposed to be fixed, so you may have purchased old stock. The SF Mahler discs have sold out several times so if you get the replacement directly from the Symphony store it should be free of spindle cracks.

I tried Symphonies Nos. 1 and 7 by Tilson Thomas and they were too mild and restrained for me, I prefer the fierce and exciting recordings from Benjamin Zander on Telarc SACD. Zander stresses both the deep depression and triumphant joy of Mahler's symphonies. Zander so far has only done 1,3,5 and 6 on SACD, and 4 and 9 on earlier redbook CDs. He may do the whole cycle? I don't know?

Yes, looking at the centre of this disc, it is indeed a Crest Natinal Disc. I have attempted to contact the SF Store, but I have not recieved an email reply. The only way I can call them is long distance, so I may try that for a replacement. I did not however, buy the disc from their store, so I hope I can convince them to give me a replacement.

Good news. I have been contacted by the SFS Store and they have said they will replace my cracked disc. Hopefully they will ship me a whole new disc. Have to wait and see how they handle this.

This problem is not limited to this lable. I have both my Simple Minds SACD's (Best of, both discs, and New Gold Dream) and my Chandos (London Symphony)found with cracks at the center. They do play fine though. I do not know if this will becom a problem in the future so I bought some spare discs for the simple minds but will contact chandos and ask.
I wonder what the reason for those cracks is.

Well, I contacted them and they said, that it was the first time they heard about that problem. (Chandos) The disc, btw, was made in the ECC and therefore probably not by crest. Interesting. But they also said, that, unless the crack should travel to the playing surface, there should not be any playing problems. Well, let's see.

After your message I checked my SF Symphony discs. I have the double CD Mahler Symphony 9 and Mahler Symphony 4. As you can see from the image enclosed in this link: http://i34.tinypic.com/rkydev.jpg the 4th Symphony has a crack in the same area of yours.
I bought at Fnac in Naples, Italy in 2004 and I don't know if they will change it after so many years.
Exactly as you, I treat my disc (very) gently...

My disc 1 of that set also has cracks. In fact, much worse than yours. Plays fine, however. At least for now. On a totally unrelated note, disc 2 of that set exhibits strange muting of the hammer blows when played back DSD. No such problem PCM. Weird.
