Now why didn´t they make a statement Blu-Ray/SACD-transport (HDMI output only) and a nice processor to go with that?

Hi Kristian,
I too was suprised by this. The new ES level Blu-Ray player (BDP-S5000ES), announced at the same time as the SCD-XA5400ES and STR-DA5400ES, does not play SACDs. I was hoping they would release an ES range universal player.

I noticed its aimed at the professional (production house, performance, broadcasting etc) market as well. Although I don't know if it would be in the same realm as the CDP-2700 ;-) http://www.sanyo-densi.com/dai2/audio/sony_cdp2700.htm For the price, and if its true, it has a better convertor, I'm quite tempted to upgrade.. :-D Hopefully its released locally.

The Sony SCD-XA5400ES at the 2008 CEDIA in Denver, CO.
I hope the display is not an indication of the software situation ;)

will this player convert DSD to PCM, and output 5.1 PCM?

Optionally, reportedly.

Looks nice. I wonder if the 2 channel analog out section will be as good as the XA9000ES? The XA5400ES is 15 lbs lighter, and it would seem isn't built as well.

It's the same build alright: it uses the same 'Frame and Beam' construction.
They left out some electronics though, including multichannel digital-to-analog conversion and associated outputs.

Why is it 15lbs lighter then?

Well, its 13 lbs lighter, not 15 (but not to split hairs) ... On the XA777ES and XA9000ES, a lot of that weight comes from the side panels, top panel, and thick front panel with glass.
Internally, I wouldn't be surprised if the XA5400ES is the same, or very similar.
The hefty outer shell isn't as important to me, but i'm sure it will be important to a lot of folks who believe in that whole "put the player on little cones to dampen vibration" sort of thing.
Whatever floats your boat, I guess... 22lbs is still pretty significant.

I´m pretty sure that internally this machine has little in common with XA9000. 9000 uses multichannel DAC-boards for stereo DA-conversion (three DACs per channel). These DAC-boards are in vertical layout with corresponding mch-connectors over main stereo RCAs. I bet they are using single mother board and lower end power supply as in XA1200/XA3000 players. The weight comes usually from heavy outer case and big transformers. Of course it doesn´t have to mean that there would be something wrong with soud quality.
