The New Marantz AV8003 "Networking" AV Preamp/Processor, according to Marantz's website passes DSD thru HDMI...and has XLR connectors for stereo playback of DSD; It is a 7.1 multi-channel 26 pound brute which also decodes the latest Blu-Ray codecs, is THX certified and has Marantz's sexy cosmetics. For $2599 it is currently in a class by itself. It will be interesting to see what Meridian, Krell and the other BIG boys come out with, but it certainly won't be in this price range

That's right. And in combination with the MM8003 7.1-channel power amp it forms a great couple. So why oh why is Marantz's new SA8003 SACD player stereo only, and doesn't it even feature an HDMI output for off-board multichannel processing?

How about my Onkyo Pro PR-SC885 and his Integra 9.8 twin? I've been doing this for a year and right now i have mine on $20 Canare/Neutrik-gold XLRs courtesy of a very professional ebayer by the name of Nyproaudio.

The big question is whether the DSD decoders in the Marantz have a better dynamic range than the Onkyo/Integra/Denon processor crop to allow for full bandwidth reproduction of SACDs?

I´m a bit curious about this dynamic range issue. What is acceptable dynamic range and how much dynamic range do SACDs usually have?

I usually like to think using common sense. Difference between whisper, and noise so loud your hearing is in danger is about 60-80 dB. I believe the dynamic range of a good microphone is in the same category.

Second point. How much of that available dynamic range are used in the end product and how much of it has been compressed to nothing. I´ve heard rock cds that have
dynamic range of 3 db. They just play VERY loud from first track to the last. Some very good classical recordings might have dynamic range of tens of dBs. Over 100dBs? No way.

Every media, (both analogue and digital), player, amp, processor etc. are capable of this.

So am I - while "highly" compressed classical music recordings are rare these days, how much dynamic range is comfortable, acceptable and safe for normal home listening especially if you have neighbours?

I have friends who are avid music listeners but who are definitely unlikely to join the SACD market, despite all my efforts to entice them. One thing they DON'T LIKE is the high dynamic range. My hungarian in-law Tibor will never forgive me for the burst of volume in Bartok: Bluebeard's Castle - Fischer (he had turned up the volume to hear the beginning and then... WHAM!!!

What are the current practical possibilities of a DSD thru HDMI connection?

I had a similar experience listening to first time Bartok´s Sonata for 2 pianos and percussion. Sorry about off-topics.
