Consider either the Pioneer Elite DV-58 AV or http://www.hifix.co.uk/sku.lasso?&item=600d849fce74ee3ae475762b4992c872&rlog=prrnr

Otherwise why not a Sony SCD XA 1200 ES?

I have an SCD XA 9000 ES which is very similar in physical appearance but I don't know if the 1200 is electronically comparable. I would guess it is. I am VERY happy with the sound of the 9000.

I would definitely go with the Sony XA9000ES or wait for the XA5400ES. Audiogon.com is great place to find a used XA9000ES one if that's what you'd prefer. If you buy one new, it takes at least 200 hours to break it in.

BTW, I've had a pioneer DV-79Avi and while it was very good, I didn't think it was as good as the XA9000ES. The Sony is just a little bit more revealing and has better clarity in the midrange.

Allen Wright of modder fame gave a very positive recomendation of the Sony XA9000ES over on Audio Asylum Hi-Res just a few days ago:

Sounds like a bargin if you can find a clean one.

You are talking about two different players here. There´s is 9000-series DVD-player and 9000-series SACD-player. I have the latter, SCD-XA9000ES, which I can recommend. Great build quality and analytical sound. And probably not a great modding object, because there´s not much room for tubes inside the player. I haven´t heard the dvd-player, though it´s reported to be fine with mch-SACDs.

The link you provided recommends the SONY DVP-S9000ES which as noted above is a DVD player. Also it is only a stereo model not MCH. It is VERY choosy about what you put in it also. No CD-R no DVD+R or DVD-R, only DVD+RW or professionally recorded DVDs.

More annoyingly mine has a lot of trouble with hybrid sacds but always plays single layer sacds fine. The SCD XA9000 ES in my main system is an altogether better kettle of fish.

Gigi, be aware though that all the players recommended to you on this thread are miles away in terms of sound quality and build quality from your 777 which is basically the same machine as the SCD1.
You will have to decide according to the price you want to spend. If you want good price and sound quality, modding a player might be the only possiblity.

Hi Julien,

I think you are mistaken. I THINK the 777 is a multi-channel player that is, other than cosmetics essentially the same as the SCD XA 9000 ES. The SCD-1 is stereo only and is VERY different in appearance from the 777.

Do you have direct experience of the SCD XA 9000 ES?

Lot´s of new mix-ups. There is a SCD-777ES and SCD-XA777ES. Different animals, latter one is mch player. Former is the SCD-1 successor.

I meant to comment that DVP-9100ES is reported to be good in mch-SACDs.
