Polly Nomial's review includes the interesting comment that Veracini's music pre-dates Paganini in some of its features. it is rather like the frequent comment, intended to praise Mozart, that elements of this or that piece by him foreshadow Schubert or some other later (and probably lesser) composer. I wonder why everyone puts it that way instead of saying, for example, that Paganini was influenced by Veracini's style or Paganini's music recalls Veracini's in some respects. Is it because we all have a deep-seated belief that everything evolves upwards as time progresses rather than simply changing?

I am nodding wisely and scratching my beard thoughtfully as I re-read the above.

That's not how I intended the phrase to come across, rather that this reveals a level of technical mastery needed that is rare in the context of the time but much mirrored after the arrival of the virtuoso in question - it also reflects my reactions to the performance because few in the past have caused me to make the connection in composition style.

Hope that's a little clearer :)

It certainly is. I had not noticed any similarities (not having really listened to Paganini, who is outside my area of interest), but I am interested in trying out a comparison following your comment.
