Hi everyone,
Could owners of this disc tell me about the sound quality and also the packaging on this title? A colleague wants to sell me his copy, but stated that the plastic slipcover was missing. When I look at photos online, I don't see a slipcover.
And many at stevehoffman.tv say the sound is very bright (compressed) and some mention ear fatigue.
Any details you can provide are much appreciated!
Cheers, Dan

I believe the plastic slip cover he is referring to is the clear plastic sleeve that the digipak slips into. Not really essential, in my opinion, unless you are purchasing for collectable value.
As far as the sound, I don't really find that it differs much, if at all, from the other EJ SACD releases, which is to say, fairly spectacular, especially given the age of the recordings. If you don’t have any of the other SACD releases, any one of them would be well worth your money, if for no other reason than to sample the re-mastering quality and surround treatment. Many of the titles can be had pretty cheaply ($8 or so for the single disc titles, plus postage) on the used market. My personal favorite of the bunch, both in termms of sonics and material,is the self-titled Elton John disc.
If you are interested specifically in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road as opposed to any of his other reissues, do a search for differences between the SACD and DVD-A versions of GBYBR, as both are available and you may find some reviewers who hold a preference for the DVD-A for various reasons.

Disc 3 on the SACD version I have is a 50-minute DVD documentary on "The Making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".
Discs 1 and 2 contain the album itself.
I loved the Surround Sound mix, which is in a different league to the RBCD mastering. A super issue, in my opinion.
[P.S. I bought mine new, and the digipak was NOT enclosed by a plastic covering. Perhaps this was done just in some territories].

There were two versions of this on SACD,
The Deluxe Edition which had the plastic slipcase but no DVD. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6407751
The regular edition in a cardboard gatefold, no slipcover but did include the DVD. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6406986
Kind of strange....the "Deluxe" Edition (other than the slipcase) actually comes with less than the non deluxe set.
Not aware of any differences with the graphics/packaging.
That explains that. I had read this earlier and waited to check my version(which is the 3 disc set) which I didn't think had a slip cover.
As for quality, I agree with jakeroux that this or any of the classic Elton SACDs are well worth getting if you're a fan. I've only listened to the surround mixes but I think they are extremely well done and add an extra dimension to the already great music. I also think the sound quality holds up and is showcased very well on SACD.
For reference(and this has been brought up in a previous thread), yourmusic.com has the single disc EJ SACDs for 7 bucks shipped and the 3 disc set of GYBR for 14 shipped. Its basically a music club but you have to agree to buy 1 disc a month(at 7 bucks shipped) until you cancel. They have very, very few SACDs but what they have are good deals. I basically joined long enough to get the SACDs I wanted and canceled. I just thought I'd mention it since its a good deal on getting the EJ SACDs from there.
