I’m unaware of if it is possible to handle Blu-ray discs as you do with CD and SACD, like insert and play. So my own ignorance prompts me to ask this to the well informed members of this forum: Is the Blu-ray format an option for “pure” audio-only releases or will you need a screen/monitor to manoeuvre within the menu system to get to the audio play mode? Are there basically any signs of such technical developments of audio-only Blu-ray?
While I’m at it: A while ago there were reports of developments of a hybrid Blu-ray disc, i.e. playable on both DVD and Blu-ray disc players – any news here?

A very good question, Tommy.
May I add a supplementary one or two? Why are people so keen to have a player which copes with everything: Blu-Ray, SACD, DVD of all sorts and CD? Isn't it now asking too much of just the one player?

Like the PS3? (Multi-region and DVD-A excepted...but you did not list them!) ;-)

Indeed; my worry is not being able to listen/watch at all when suffering from component failure.

The discs are there. See /showthread/28253//y?page=first
Reportedly there is a BD *player* profile 3.0 which dispenses with the need for video decoders and such but from what I gather it still needs to be able to render menus so I doubt we'll see BD-audio-only players.

No. Those plans have probably gone the way of Total HD -- Warner's plan for a HD-DVD/BD hybrid.

It's perfectly reasonable for a consumer to ask. Most prefer to have as few boxes as possible under or on top of their TV set.
Not everyone is as crazy like me to have a HDD recorder, DVD recorder, SACD player, CD recorder, LaserDisc player, record player, cassette deck, AV receiver, VHS and VCC recorders and some more stuff next to their TV. In fact I even have two LD players -- one for PAL, one for NTSC; they are from before the multi-standard age. I also have a player for my handful of 'Green Book' Digital Video movies.
Apparently Sony is the only company that managed thus far to combine BD and SACD in a single drive (though they haven't offered it yet in a AV stack type device). I suppose Pioneer are looking at it, as may be Oppo. See discussion at /showthread/16532/29391/y#29391

Only VHS? No Video 2000 and Betamax? ;-)
Ironically, it's possible to play all current audio/video disc formats with a suitably equipped media center PC (using a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive), except for one format ... SACD.

You called yourself crazy and you have no MiniDisc recorder or DCC recorder? LOL (I just purchased a refurbished MD component recorder directly from Sony)
Don't forget Denon....it's the only company publicly stating it's looking to introduce a BD/SACD/CD player. However, with the sale of D&M Holdings (parent company to Denon, Marantz, McIntosh, Boston Acoustcis, Snell, etc.)....

Yes, VCC (Video Compact Cassette) = V2000!

Correct. I've planned to obtain a DCC recorder but never got around to buying one. They're dirt cheap in case I still want one :-) I've got a MiniDisc but no hardware anymore. Used to have one at work.

Blu Ray will go nowhere as a hi-rez audio only carrier. History is crowded with examples that show that the larger market favors convenience, portability and price over quality every time. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is that they've been listening to lo-fi music for so long, they have no idea what their missing. And even if they did, they probably wouldn't care. The generation of consumers that will download all their music and never buy a compact disc or LP, is already on the planet. As they grow up, music delivery as we know it, will disappear.
