I assume that, since it's not listed here, BIS's site, and not listed at Arkivmusic as one (http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=200357), and not to mention the catalog number doesn't imply it, that this new boxset isn't SACD -- even though all the original individual disc releases are.

Just to be sure though. The review at Arkiv actually gives a quote from a reiview of one of the individuals that mentions the SACD sonics, but I imagine that's irrelevent. Kinda a shame, as the SACD-ness might be worth replacing the Jarvi box on DG, even to the point compensating for the dialog in Peer Gynt (something that really annoys me, but I kinda understand why it's there).

I do assume this is a sort of price issue -- SACDs cost more, and for the convenience of the cheaper boxset they are just standard CDs, or at least that's what I guess happened.

This seems normal practice. It's a low priced box set, whereas SACD is still considered a premium price product.

Decca did the same thing when issuing the Mahler/Chailly recordings in a box set. The symphonies that were earlier released on hybrid SACDs were only included as CDs.

I am afraid that you are assuming correctly.

In order to keep the price down, we didn't really have a choice in the matter. To go up from 8 CD:s-for-3 to 8 SACD:s-for 4, we would have encountered a rather large buying resistance, in spite of the luxurious books and the Box itself, especially so, as many of the prospective "SACD-buyers" already will have bought some of the original volumes.

Sorry, this isn't what I would ideally like to do, but the market-place is a hard arena.

Best - Robert
