In your mind, do you have a list of the top 20th Century Violin concertos? How many are on SACD?

Stravinsky and Elgar for starters. Both on SACD.

Berg also - not. Should be, wish it was.

Walton - coming from Bis.

Agreed about Berg! I'd welcome a Walton violin concerto on Bis, though there is one out on Philips (coupled with Sibelius) that I like.

Being me, I'd list the Shostakovich 1st (several recordings) and 2nd (none yet on SA-CD). Both Prokofiev violin concerti are out on SA-CD (Fischer #1, Heifetz #2).

I should have said a little more about exactly what I was thinking when I initiated this thread. The Glazunov, Sibelius, Elgar, and I am probably missing one or two others, are so 19th century oriented that I don't (didn't) think of them as 20th century concertos even though they were written after 1900.

I agree with the Berg, the Walton, both Prokofiev concertos and certainly the first of Shostakovitch. I am not entirely certain about his 2nd one however. Schnittke's number 4 strikes a resonance with me and I absolutely love the Bartok 2nd. Am I the only one? Are there others we are missing? Peter Maxwell Davies?

Where in such a listing do the Moeran concerto and MaConchy's Serenata Concertante fit in (if at all?) What of Rautavaara?

Then there's Nielsen, and various "Russians" - Kabalevsky, Khachaturian, and Martinu's violin concertante pieces recently issued on Hyperion......well, Kabalevsky is probably not great, but is great fun.

For me, Elgar is Edwardian, so early C20th, and Sibelius very much C20th, but I do understand your parameters.

Vasks "Distant Light" ... not sadly on SA-CD.

Good topic. In addition to some already mentioned, here are some of my favorites: Barber, Bloch, Bowen, Casella (on SACD), Englund, Karlowicz, Linde, Martinu (1 & 2), Myaskovsky, Nielsen, Peterson-Berger, Rosza, Rubbra, Schoek, Vainberg/Weinberg, Weiner (1 & 2). Yes, I was being selective (I have many more 20th century Vln Ctos in my collection). Also, I don't do atonal.
