In the early days of DVD Covent Garden Pioneer issued the 'Gold And Silver Gala' in 24bit 96kHz stereo, and it sounds wonderful. (I think Pioneer meant it as a demo of DVD sound capabilities - they never followed it up with more releases)
I've got various 24bit 96kHz stereo DVDs with classical music released by Pioneer from the early days of DVD. They're Japanese imports.
- the Danube Story: Danubia Festival Orchestra directed by Adam Han-Gorski; Emmerich Kálmán/Karl Michael Ziehrer/Fritz Kreisler/Oskar Straus - Kdyz mne stará matka: Songs my mother taught me ~ Songs of Smetana and Dvorák; Hajóssyová Benacková Yanál Lapsansku, Novákovo Trio
(I've had to simplify some of the more tricky diacritical characters :)

Excellent! I didn't know about those. The Covent Garden one is a favourite of mine, and is one of the best sounding opera DVDs I have. I have the Pioneer issue of Verdi's Otello from Covent Garden, which is another good one - very atmospheric recording at least as presented in DTS surround. I have been very sloppy about exploring opera on SACD (concentrating on orchestral classical for some reason) and probably should make sure I get the PentaTone Tosca at the very least.

24 Bit 96kHz Stereo only discs that require no menus exist and can be played on ANY DVD player. They were released by Chesky, Classic Records, Arts Music and a couple of others. But they never caught on as they offered digital out and no copy protection. These are still among some of the best sounding recordings on the planet.
Plus three titles offered 24 Bit 96kHz Stereo plus full motion Video at the same time! Two from Chesky (Chuck Mangione and Sara K.) on one from Analogue Productions.
Neil Young has started offering his recordings in this format as well as a few other bands. 24 Bit 96kHz DAD DVD is high resolution for the masses as everyone I have ever know has a DVD player.
I know all of this, but the format was never marketed properly or ever really marketed at all. This is probably because it didn't have any copy protection, which is what the industry desperately wanted at the time. It also still has to have video in the form of at least one still frame in order to work (dumb design). Had the industry pushed this without the use of any video and called it DVD-CD with availability of hybrid discs that could contain a regular CD layer, I believe it would have faired far better than both DVD-Audio and SACD combined.
On another note, I think the key to an ultimate digital audio format might be one that has a frequency response high enough so no anti-aliasing filter is even needed. I've read that a frequency response of about 200Khz would be required for this, so given that a 441khz sampling rate is the first multiple of 44.1khz to achieve this, why not just come up with a once and for all 441khz/24 bit system and be done with it forever?

I use MediaMonkey for my tagging and storing. It also has the benefit of converting to MP3 when syncing so that i can store FLAC and not have to keep an MP3 copy just for the ipod

Not sure I understand...
I just downloaded them in Firefox, saved the files on my hard disk. I'll use Foobar to set the TAGs in the format I like and I'll copy the files over the network to my music server.
That's all - I don't use Nero or any other CD burner because I do not burn the files to CD.

I just double clicked on the individual songs and the download started. I just used my browser to get them on the hard disc.

All very good. Thanks.
