I recently purchased some BIS piano recordings, two are by Yevgeny Sodbin, Rachmaninov & Scriabin and one by Freddy kempff, Moussorgsky/Ravel/balakirev. The sound quality is simply amazing in its clarity and dynamics, these folks have really mastered the art of capturing the sound of piano, one of the most difficult instrument to record properly. If you have a high power audio system with a decent low frequency extension give these SACD's a try, you will not be disappointed.

You know, while I was listening to Sodbin perform the Rachmaninov second sonata on his BIS recording I started thinking why can’t we hear pianists like Pollini in this kind of sound, it is a tragedy, a true shame to capture his performances on DG’s crappy piano sound.
Do these pianists ever listen to their recordings on a decent sound system?

I note that in the latest issue of The Gramophone, Sudbin states in an interview that he has recorded the original version of the Rachmaninov PC4. This is most enticing.
Perhaps this will be coupled with the Rach PC1, which he states is his favorite concerto. Bissie, is this in the works? A complete Rach set would be even better.
Actually, anything Sudbin cares to record has become a must purchase.

I do not have Sodbin's Scarlatti, not a big fan of this composer, but just to hear Sodbin I will get that SACD. Any comment on that Scarlatti performance?
I sure like to see him do Liszt Sonata, this young man has the firepower to cope with that compositon.

A good question! DG tends to mic too closely, such as Pierre-Laurient Aimard's new CD of Bach's The Art of the Fugue--it sounds as if I'm standing right next to the piano! It can be exhilarating at first, but the ear soon tires. Of course, a close perspective gives more impact, but that's not how it sounds in the best seat in the house. Somehow BIS manages plenty of impact without sticking the listener's head inside the piano!
