I've received an answer to my e-mail to Soundmirror, and they confirm that they are not currently working on any RCA Living Stereo SACDs, nor, is anything in the works.

That is really bad news, as bad as it can be.

I count 54 releases of RCA Living Stereo on SACD. These correspond to about 110 LPs of recordings. Does anyone know what fraction of the original catalog this represents?

Thanks for the link, Claude. It looks like about one third of the original classical recordings have been released on SACD.

..and it looks at first glance that about a third of the original LPs were in fact licenced from Decca and won't ever appear on LS SACD, including anything with the LSO, VPO, PCO, NSO......

However there are some Reiner, Munch, Graffman and Richter recordings which may yet still appear on SACD.

The titles that are now Decca were part of the distribution and recording deal between Decca and RCA at the end of the fifties to mid sixties.

It would be interesting to hear from Sony/BMG on why they seem to have dropped the Living Stereo SACDs. I suspect they would talk of falling sales for the series which of course had nothing to do with a pricing structure of that saw the price go up with each set of issues.

And yet, they are issuing elderly recordings on SACD, for instance the recent Karajan Carmen although only in Japan.

LSC 2323 Tchaikovsky Capric. Italienne Kondrashin RCA SO. Rimsky-Korsakov Capric. Espangnol Shumsky(Violin)
LSC 2398 Kablevsky/Khachaturian Comedians/Masquerade Suite Kondrashin/RCAVO

I'd like to have had this on one SACD.

That's on my wish list, too, Peter. You are probably aware that such a coupling appeared on a RBCD, which I have, and the sound isn't too bad if slightly harsh. The original recordings were always a little over-resonant, I believe, and I'm sure SACD would help.

Thanks Claude for the link to the interesting website which has a list of some 240 RCA Living Stereo releases. The list is based on 'The Golden Era of RCA Records' which was first published by J A MItchell in March 1985. This 'paper' has since been revised many times the last being in April 1990. You can obtain a copy of the latest 'paper' via the website below:

http://www.irvmusic.com/mitchell.htm

I have just received my copy which is some 37 pages long and can recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Living Stereo series. Out of interest Mitchell says that about 700 stereo classical records were made by RCA in the Living Stereo series between 1957 and 1964.
