Has anyone compared digital to analogue transfer of multichannel sacd?

Hi --

The signal ends up as analog when it gets to the speaker outputs from the amplifier. So, I hope I'm not rephrasing your question too much by this, but the question may be _where_ in the chain does the signal change to analog.

I've got two rooms set up for SACD multichannel. The answers are different for me in these two rooms. I've got a small room with equidistant speakers and an analog bass manager, and it sounds terrific with direct output from the player of analog, 6xRCA multichannel through the bass manager then to the receiver. I've also got a large, boomy room that is difficult to manage without a lot of equalization help, and the speakers are variably distant from my favorite listening spot. Options for manipulation of analog signal in the time domain and with equalization are limited. In this room, then, I prefer to keep things in the digital domain (DSD via HDMI from my Oppo player, 88kHZ PCM via HDMI from my PS3) and let my receiver (Onkyo 805) work its magic. I haven't noted a sound difference between converting DSD->analog via multichannel RCA in the Oppo versus "DSD direct" with conversion in the Onkyo, but the cable situation sure is simpler with HDMI :-) I don't have many discs that sound good in my large room without equalization, time delay and bass management, so I don't try these comparisons often.

Hope this helps -
Rob

Could you elaborate a little on your setup in the second room? Why is it nessesary to have both the Oppo player (which model) and the PS3? And does your receiver have two HDMI input-connections?

Necessary? Just desirable :-). The PS3 plays BluRay (the main reason I got it, though it's a good SA-CD player too), the Oppo plays DVD-Audio and sends DSD to my receiver... ...I didn't even mention my Sony carousel SA-CD player (which I have hooked up using RCAx6, and in which I store most of my discs)! So, yes, I've got 3 SA-CD players hooked up in the larger room :-) It's overkill, but naturally I find ways to justify each one of 'em! I have to say that I find myself taking discs out of the carousel to play them in the Oppo or in the PS3; in my particular setup the sonics are a bit better with these options than the carousel. Your results may vary.

The Onkyo 805 has 3 HDMI inputs.

Do you know if the Onkyo TX-SR705 is also capable of DVD-a playback via HDMI like the TX-SR805?

All the Onkyo *5 range have HDMI 1.3 inputs, so yes.

I just upgraded my OPPO DV-981 to a Parasound Halo D3 Universal Player ( I paid $999 and it lists for $2500). I also have the Onkyo 705 and I think for the money it's a minor miracle...one magazine which always has a lot of demerits for every reviewed component actually deemed the 705 demerit free). Ironically, the light-weight OPPO plays DVD-A better than the Parasound...but the Parasound excells at CD/DTScd playback, SACD (both stereo and multi-channel) and the upconversion to 1080i (My TV really doesn't miss the 1080p) blows away the Oppo's farouda enhanced upconversion.I also miss the HDCD playback on the OPPO but hopefully you'll replace the supplied power cord with a more sturdy PS Power Punch cord. It was a surprising upgrade for the OPPO and at $49 was a bargain. The PS audio cords are also an upgrade for the blu-ray and hd-dvd player's crappy supplied power cords....1 meter with C7 connector (for the two-pronged OPPO/HD-DVD/BLU-RAY supplied power cords interface) All Cords take time to "break-in")

Does the upgrade of the power cord also do wonders for the sacd & dvd-a playback (which is what the player almost solely will be used for)? I have a PopCornHour A-100 which handles all my video playback! If the power cord you suggest is also a benefit for the sacd&dvd-a then I would like to know the brand and model so I can locate a european version (220v)?
