The Malmo Symphony recordings of Franz Schmidt are to be released on BIS (Naxos is the distributor), and since BIS is quite active with multichannel SACD, one may assume the releases will be in surround, too.

Played it again this morning. My opinion hasn't changed. It is a terrific sound but by the end I felt browbeaten.

Hi Jonty,
Well Ive now had it for a few days and decided to approach it over a few seperate listenings.
I also tried reading the notes and I realize I must be dyslexic as I cannot follow half of what has been translated into an understandable or helpfull guide to this composer or this work.
After the first three movements that were as exciting as listening to a "New" Mahler symphony with echoes of R Strauss ,Zemlinsky but not Schmidt and I was wondering about your browbeaten comments!.
My only quibble after one and a half plays of this enormous work is that the choral contibution doesnt seem to be in correct balance or recorded at the correct volume. It seems to be much closer miked than the orchestra.
(stereo only so far) .At the end of this i did feel as though I had lost the thread of the previous 3 movements.
This certainly is one of the loudest and complicated yet easy going ? works Ive encountered. Its staying in my collection.
One day I will understand it.

Perhaps in another year I will understand the notes.
Dave

Dear Dave,

You won't understand cpo's notes on virtually any of their recordings. The translations are dreadful.

Just to clear up one point. In my original post I said that I had a similar reaction to Schmidt's music not that it sounded like it. We all have musical blanks.

Interesting that you feel it is like a new Mahler symphony, another problematical composer for me. I am OK with symphonies 1-4 and then I tend to loose interest. In my teens I played Richard Strauss' Tone Poems to death and now only a few retain their appeal. As for Zemlinsky only the Lyric Symphony is in my collection. I guess that when it comes to the late romantics you have to be very good to keep me interested. It can all get too over heated far too quickly hence my feeling browbeaten.

I am clearly out of step with Hausegger's music. The disc is well played and recorded. I would encourage anyone temped to give it go and let us know what they think here.

Thanks for tip on CPOs translation.I have given up on others but didnt want to admit it.I will not try again and then put the tablets back in the medicine cupboard.
As regards Zemlinsky I gave up on the Lyric and sold it.Having given up on a vinyl version as well. (The Mermaid symphony is much more interesting IMO)
Interesting about Schmidt is I had E German version of some of those symphonies(except no 1) which were totally different from the Chandos version. The disc of No2 was very long and compressed on one side.

If you want a new R Strauss poem try the Bearton disc I reviewed.I still believe he originally wrote it and left the score behind in Poland.Sorry to hear you have problems with Mahler. There are similarities in the orchestration early on but one is the master the other probably a very competent student and admirer of his music.?.

There Rob Barnett mentions similarities to Mahler, Strauss, Delius. Howells and Schmidt.

I have the Szymanowski which I bought mainly for the violin concerto. It is a very good disc and the Concert Overture is fun imitation Strauss. The performance of the fourth symphony is good enough to convince me that I had underrated the work in Szymanowski's output.

I don't think that this is correct John.
Naxos not BIS will be releasing these performances
Sadly the multichannel version will not be heard until Naxos decide which hi-rez carrier they will support.
