Was this originally recorded in surround, or has it had a "surround effect" added, with a bit of artificial reverb? I'd prefer a recording which was done with multichannel in mind from the outset....

All the technical data given in the booklet are also reproduced on the disc entry here. I haven't seen any information by DG on how the new surround remix was done (sam for the other early 90's DG recordings reissued on multichannel SACD). Given that a stereo remix has been done (which sounds much better than the original CD), it can be assumed that the surround remix is not just a reprocessed stereo signal.
However I can not imagine how they would be able to make a surround mix that is faithful to the real acoustics with a recording that was meant to be stereo only (but used more than just two microphones, hence the possibility to remix).
All I can say is that the stereo remix sounds great, despite the limited PCM resolution (24bit/44kHz).

A poster who worked for Universal said that many of their recordings in the 90s were mic'd so that they could be remixed for surround sound for future re-releases. This is one of them.

The interesting DG one is the Pollini Chopin Polonaises SACD - the multichannel layer sounds fabulous compared to the stereo, but I've no idea how it was done.

That was a quad recording.

Well, I've ordered it from Caiman via Amazon marketplace.
Didn't get good reviews on Amazon, but reviews here were good and I trust you lot more!
