This new disc from Hänssler Profil is advertised as an SACD on JPC and some other places. As it is not listed here, I queried JPC before ordering and was assured it was an SACD. It has just arrived, sporting a Hybrid Multichannel sticker on its shrink-wrap, clearly an afterthought, and the disc label has SACD and DSD logos, although there are no SACD indications on the disc box. It is certainly just a CD. I can understand why JPC confirmed its status; this beast is well-camouflaged for the unwary. I seem to have fallen foul of several incompetent pressing plants this week...

Strange indeed.
The front and back cover can be seen here:

This reminds me of when I posted several months ago about the Roxy Music' "Avalon" CD layer not being read as an HDCD on my OPPO even though it's printed on the back insert and it sounds clean and spacious enough to be an HDCD. It's an imported SACD from Holland I believe. As popular as that SACD is amongst sa-cd.net members, no one replied.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that most of these falsely labeled titles come out of Asia, right?
Cheers,
Dan

Well, this seems to be an authentic German product. I have returned the disc to JPC, It certainly has not got an SACD layer, whether because it was never intended to have one and is mistakenly labelled, or it is correctly labelled and badly pressed. Whatever, it doesn't suggest 'best practice' in quality control - I've had 3 major problem discs arriving in one week. Your mention of an HDCD reminds me of a supposed Exton SACD of Rachmaninov's The Bells from Ashkenazy I ordered from Amazon UK last year - it turned out to be an HDCD, but had a DSD logo on the disc label!

Hi Claude, Yes, I looked at the cover on the JPC site, where I purchased it, and several other sites too. It was very sneaky to find that the usual Hybrid/Multichannel label was on the outer cling-wrap! The Haenssler website was no help, it seems not to be up to date. I must stop buying new discs....

Or stick to discs listed here :-). I saw this and decided it looked suspicious.

As far as I know, most SACD players have occasional trouble reading SACDs. Some will play only as CD on some players that don't even recognise there is an SACD layer, you might want as well to make sure of that by analysing the amount of data with a computer. Some show only the CD player on my modded Sony and play as SACD on my Cary. Vice versa, some that don't play the SACD layer on the Cary have no problem on the Sony. And my first player was a Marantz too.

Was the disc's playing side a golden colour or was it silver? If it was golden then it was a hybrid SACD. If it was silver it was either a RBCD or a single layer SACD.
If it was golden then Julien's suggestion of disc reading problems seems likely.
Incidentally, it doesn't seem to be listed on the Profil web site!

Jonty, I didn't know that playing surfaces had different colours, that is really helpful! Cello Fiesta! is silver and thus a mislabelled CD. I looked on the profil site too but there was no sign of it. I was suspicious from the start, it not being listed on SA-CD.net, but JPC checked, must have seen the sticker on the wrapping and assured me it was OK.
