The Haitink 6 is released both as SACD and RBCD.

Thanks for the correction. I apologize for the mis-attribution of the Haitink review to D. Hurwitz. It was indeed another reviewer who posted that review.

My intention was to say that the RBCD version of the disc was reviewed. ClassicsToday.com also reviewed the RBCD version of the Haitink/Bruckner 7 on the same label.

....and why not.... Gergiev's is a very thought-provoking performance. I'm looking forward to the rest of the cycle!

Peter

Having listened to the samples of the first symphonie on LSO website, I KNOW I will have to get the whole cycle. As I'm collecting the Zinman cycle also, I think I will wait for the Gergiev boxed set to be (hopefully) released later.

Just my opinion. Do you have one?

It's interesting how the Classics Today reviewer focuses primarily on the order of the movements. The Alma Mahler themed Andante movement is almost always played third. Most reviewers on Amazon notice the fast pace of this recording. I've decided to give this recording a try based on the Amazon review by "Sante Fe listener". I've had good luck buying in the past based on Santa Fe listener's reviews of Mahler recordings. The review is useful in how it contrasts this new recording to famous historical recordings such as the fast paced Szell/Cleveland Mahler 6.

Got mine from Caiman yesterday. Loved the performance, but not crazy about the sound. Compared to Fischer's M6, the sound quality is somewhat cloudy.

MC is marginally better than the two channel, but only because it's MC.

I noticed these same sound issues with the Haitink Beethoven 6. Great performances, less than great sound.

To my mind the biggest disadvantage of the LSO Live series is the venue, the dry-as-dust Barbican in London. Gergiev is performing - and one assumes recording - the Mahler 8 in St Paul's cathedral, which has a notoriously 'swimmy' acoustic. A Mahler 2 I heard there some years ago was a disaster.

Yes the sound is dryish, but my ears soon adjusted. I like the performance, which get better as it goes on, but I'm not sure it's really distinctive apart from the generally fast tempi.

The playing is vigorous in the faster music but the lack of opulence in the strings does act against the success of the Andante and other passages. If you like your Mahler sounding like it's played by one of the world's great orchestras you may find this a bit disappointing. The Finale is very succesful, certainly.
