Bruce,
I know they are on DVDA but have you heard the Abravanal/Utah series of Sibelius symphonies.I think thy are all in surround.
Personally I find these very satisfying, certainly NOT OTT and extremely well recorded in that open accoustic which somehow captures the landscape better than others. Not sure what Edwin makes of them. You will also be able to get them at a reasonable price but have to put up with damn silly oversized cases.Dave

Hi Dave! I haven't heard the Abravanel cycle, but I can imagine that it is very good as the conductor is very underrated.

i have the abravanel DVD-As of sibelius, and find them very satisfying - as ramesh says, a BIG room acoustic which suits the music well, and very involving music-making. fine re-mastering. they weren't expensive, and i'm very glad i bought them.

Bruce,
Karajan's 1960s Sibelius 5 on DG was reissued last year in Japan in sound which was a cut above the reasonable 'Originals' remastering together with the 7th. His DG 4th and 6th haven't been remastered in Japan to the best of my knowledge.

I ordered the DG Karajan Sibelius 5 and 7 and wow, they are night and day (or should that be Nightride and Sunrise) superior to the DG Originals CDs. The vividness of the sound is remarkable.

Does anyone recall the original LP issue of this recording of En Saga? Which other works were on the disc? Has this recording of En Saga ever been available on RBCD?

I imagine that some of the other works appear here: Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, Sibelius: Suites - Sir Colin Davis

This early Davis is fine but surely the finale of no 5 is far to fast. It sounds rushed.

Well, well, well. That was my first impression, what 30 some odd years ago? - when I purchased the LP. Neither does it have, in the second movement, if I recall correctly, the otherworldly magic of the bassoon in von Karajan's (62 was it?) recording. But I just received it in the mail a day or so ago and look forward to hearing it anew. I have become much more tolerant of interpretations that do not seem to gel with me on first or second hearing - sometimes adjusting to new ideas over the course of much time and much to my benefit, I think.

I got this on LP when it first came out and I really tried to like it. But I didn't, not at all actually. I like it much better today, having heard the performances several times as I bought the box of all 7 when Philips first released them on rbcd. The orchestral playing is expert.

But Davis seriously lacks the magic of Karajan, all of his recordings of it, and the finale is rushed. That said it is still an attractive disc because Sibelius survives different approaches.

I finally got this recording. I had delayed because I had already bought the SACD from Japan, but the lure of En Saga finally overcame me.

I shouldn't have waited. I had always loved this 7th, but the later CD versions sounded very dated. The Japanese disc was a big improvement. But even that didn't prepare me for how vast the improvement of the PentaTone would be! This took me back to the original thrill I felt when first encountering it 30 years ago. The sound is so much richer and more detailed, yet I never heard Sir Colin grunt once! Now I'll have to get the PentaTone fantastique!

All I can say is order it you will not be disappointed! Talking about Berlioz conducted by Davis am hoping PentaTone might one day give us the Te Deum which is my all time favourite large scale choral work ...
