As an opera lover I am glad with this announcement. Any information concerning the remastering? The 20 bit RCA CD version sounds a bit thin! - Zeus, can you help?

Details here (in Japanese):

From what I've been able to figure out, this is a limited edition set with special presentation to celebrate the Karajan Centennial (presumably his birth). It talks about it being an "initial production" so maybe a cheaper (CD only?) version will follow. The recording dates from 1963. It says that it's a "reprint of the original RCA Archive of two-channel analog master tapes" with "ever more freshness in a resurgence of low quality" ... don't you just love automated translations.

Maybe someone that doesn't have to rely on Google for the translation can add to this.

Of all of Karajan's opera recordings, why this one for SACD to celebrate his centennial?

Still, I will definitelly take it.

Matthew,
I think this is Herbie's only RCA opera recording. Hence the SACD possibility, although it's very disappointing that this isn't being released on RCA LS.

Karajan was principally an EMI recording artist in the 1950s, before he shifted primarily to DG. However, neither DG nor even EMI had as good distributors in the USA as RCA, and DEcca via, I believe at the time, their links to RCA. Karajan angled a Decca recording contract in the late 50s early sixties in order to gain a greater recorded presence in the American market, and I guess with Leontyne Price being an RCA exclusive artist, this is why RCA was the company for this release.

I have this recording in the RBCD format. The singing and playing are exquisite. Here is the cover image of the version I have. It is a 3-disc set. However, I haven't listened to this in quite a while so I think I will put it on again soon. The Label is Lyrica and was licensed to Ermitage in 1995 by BMG. There is no libretto in this disc. It was made in Italy. If the price on the upcoming SA-CD isn't too steep I may just get this one, however it will need to be relased closer to home. Ordering from Japan sounds pricey!

I just converted the 10,500 Japanese Yen to Canadian Dollars... $107.873 Canadian Dollars! Unless this gets released in North America at a reasonable price, I don't think I will be able to get this one.

I am willing to pay to have this recording on SACD despite import duties likely to push the cost closer to £70. However, I just don't want to be stung and have it released in Europe in a few months time. Anyone have any idea if a European issue is likely?

Sounds like a pensioner paying for botox.

The www.cdjapan.co.jp web site talks of it being a 'pre-release' in Japan. So it is possible that there may be a release elsewhere but I didn't wait.

Finally bit the bullet, as it looked like it might be going out of print, and I'm so glad I did. Even for $120 USD, I think it's worth it. Despite being close to 50 years old, the sound is pretty good, and the singing is glorious. What a crying shame the RCA living stereo series is no more!
