Can anyone tell me what the release date for this is, please? I'm very interested to hear the Apollon!

According to the Amazon.co.jp page, the ridiculously priced ($200) limited edition "direct cut" SACD will be released on March 26.
Maybe there will be a regular version later.

Thats a whack of change for one disc! However, it would be very interesting to hear such a disc. Would it sound any different than other discs?

You should be. Relying on what I've heard from the Exton "regular" versions, the original recording, even with direct cut, cannot be up to the level of a good Pentatone anyway. Trust me on this, it cannot be worth the money. And I think it's a shame for the company to be thus claiming indirectly that they are aware they can do better. Why bother making high-rez SACDs in the first time? You should come up with what you know best. Period.

Thanks for the info Claude. I hadn't realised that it was one of the fabled Direct Cut scams and am very disappointed: maybe BIS or Pentatone will release a good Apollon, perhaps with Pulcinella. I'm certainly never going to pay such ridiculous prices for an SACD.
Regards. John

22000 yen is very reasonable, considering that Punyversal Japan will charge you 200000 yen [ sic ] for a glass CD of Karajan's 1962 Beethoven 9.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think that Direct-Cut-SACD is an annoying marketing gag. Because a DSD-stream is a digital format, which can be put on a Hard disc without any loss, Direct-cut only can mean that the disc was made without post-production for example using the Sonoma workstation. This abdication of post-production, which, to my knowledge, always uses high-bit-pcm, could afford better sound. I think this for example is the reason why the sound of the Pentatone RQR and the Living Stereo SA-CDs is so natural. If this is the real thing, the fantasy-price of 20.000 Yen would be heavy!

I agree that the technical justification seems odd, concerning a digital format which can be copied without loss. What will be next? Half Speed mastered SACD? 180g SACD pressings? ;-)
At that price, Van Zweden should deliver the SACD personally and invite for dinner.
