Thread: Nielsen Symphonies anyone?

We have a really fine Nielsen 5th. Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring, Nielsen: Symphony No. 5 - Paavo Järvi which is mated with a Rite of Spring that has left some disappointed.

But so far as I can see there is no modern mch recording of any of the other symphonies. Being particularly fond of both the first symphony and third symphonies, I find that difficult.

Please: BIS, PentaTone, Telarc, Dacapo, Channel et.al. - couldn't we have a good recording of those symphonies? Actually, all of the Nielsen symphonies would be particularly nice!

I keep seeing new Beethoven, Beethoven, Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler and no Nielsen! Why?

In the meantime you can enjoy the Nielsen symphonies on DVD-video from Schönwandt on Dacapo in 5.1 sound.

Thank you - I have that but not the 5.1 sound on the system with the TV and DVD player. Maybe someday! To my ears, Schönwandt seems pretty good on those symphonies - what do you think?

Bruce,

We could all probably pick individual recordings we like better than Schonwandt's dvds, including some of his own rbcds, but taken as a whole I think this set is very fine. The dts 5.1 sound is not the equal of well done sacd, but it's more than adequate. Most times I turn off the video image and just listen because there's a fundamental dissonance between my TV's 32" visual image and the 5.1 sound. It's an interesting experiment in how each of us processes information; to me the sound image seems constricted when the video's on, so I guess I tend to hear what I see. Despite the virtues of this set I couldn't agree more about the need for more Nielsen on sacd (in fact I was listening to Martin Frost's sensational recording of the clarinet concerto only this morning, and thinking that very thought).

Schönwandt is a good Nielsen conductor, but as in the Vänskä cycle he doesn´t produce greatness in all six. Blomstedt on Decca is still the most even and the one cycle I wholeheartedly recommend. My dream is that Ondine would record Leif Segerstam in this music. I heard a fourth from him some years ago that was blistering.

I pretty much agree with Edvin on this.

I also keep praying for Prokofiev Symphonies (other than the 5th). A great opportunity was lost when Puniversal abandoned SACD just before Gergiev's cycle. I hadn't been too sold on his SACDs, but after a renovation to my listening room, my surround is rewired and I've been reevaluating him--much better than I remembered!

But back to Nielsen--at least we're getting the Quartets. I found volume one to be a revelation! I'd always thought of the Quartets as earlier "lesser" Nielsen, but the Young Danish make me now believe at least the Op. 44 is a masterpiece!

And finally, while on the topic of begging the labels for music we love and think is important: how about an Arnold cycle? Like Mahler and Shostakovich he gives your engineers ample opportunity to strut their stuff so-to-speak, but it's also music that bears repeated listening and yet won't offend the ears of those who demand tonality!

I was given the Schoenwandt as a present from a Danish friend, and as I have a multiplayer can play it through the hi-fi. Agree the DTS 5.1 sound is pretty good, and the performances stand up to repeated listening - a very good way of 'learning' the symphonies, as the production is quite good at highlighting the themes and orchestration. There is a lyrical film about Nielsen's life and work by Karl Aage Rasmussen in the boxed set

In addition to a few Nielson Symphonies on SACD, the "Aladdin Suite" would be great too.

In addition to this I'd like to add all of Nielsen's orchestral music over and above his symphonies eg his concertos.

I would be delighted of DaCapo were to release a complete Nielsen symphony cycle on SACD, especially if Thomas Dausgaard and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra were to play it....I love the DaCapo SACD that the same conductor/orchestra did of the symphonic music of Nielsen....

I too have the Telarc/Jarvi Nielsen 5, which I love despite the limp and virginal Rite of Spring....until DaCapo and the Danish group decide to record the cycle in SACD, I will stay happy with my RBCD cycle with Blomstedt and San Francisco on Decca..

Cheers,
