What is the end result of them not supporting DSD over HDMI? Does it have a noticeable effect on the sound quality? With a $399 price tag and no DSD over HDMI, I am glad I did not wait for it. I bought the 980 instead.

Quite so. It's hard to see why they are charging $399 for a last-gen machine. If it had Blu Ray or hard-drive and networking capapbility, then fair enough.

Had a chance to read review and it seems the technology is high-end DVD. Still last gen, but if you have a large DVD collection, looks good. Wonder how the upscaling compares to, for example, the Onkyo 875. At the very least this machine will give the best DVD picture signal possible at DVD resolution.

However, no mention of sound in that review!

PlayStation3 does.

Annoyingly it's not an option -- it's the only way thus far.

Former PS3/Yamaha 2700 owner, now replaced by Oppo 980/Panny BD30/Yamaha 3800.

I wish you could compare MPCM to DSD direct one step conversion with the Yamaha in Pure Direct mode, on good LFE fronts 2 channel, then go 5.1 with a decent sub, again in Pure Direct or calibrated.

Day and night my friend, day and night, once you eliminate processing. Lucky enough for my room to resemble the SACD standard speaker layout.

Anyway so far very few have seen the light, but fortunately, more are coming mainly through relatively cheap setups like the Onkyo 805/Oppo 980.

Just picked up the Yamaha HTR-6190. Along with the OPPO 980 in direct DSD the sound difference is phenomenal. I just upgraded from the Yamaha HTR-5660 which no slouch of a receiver itself. When set in 'Direct DSD Mode' SACD sound will blow you away in either stereo or multi-channel. I am hearing sounds in my earlier SACD's that I never heard before. I have a collection of close to 150. When I compare this with the PCM sound of DVD-Audio there is a huge difference. I have now seen and heard the light. It is spelled S.A.C.D.

Did some further research this evening and found this:

Expected Audio Features Include (no official release yet):
- Optimized Power Supply and Audio Circuitry
- High Resolution Audio Digital-to-Analog Converters
- 7.1CH Surround Sound and Audiophile-Level Sound Quality
- SACD, Redbook CD and HDCD Universal Playback with Precision Track 3 Drive Mechanism
- Digital audio output via optical, coaxial and HDMI
- DTS Digital Surround, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro-Logic II support
- HDMI audio output supporting bit-stream and uncompressed multi-channel high resolution audio
- 24-bit, 192kHz, 8-channel high resolution audio D/A converters
- Optimized analog audio stage and isolated audio power supply
- USB 2.0 interface for video, picture and music playback

*** Also, rumors are circulating online that OPPO is already working on a Blu-Ray player slated for an April 2009 release. While this would likely exceed the Sony PS3's abilities due to the fact that it would also support DVD-A and feature a higher-end video chip and 7.1 audio, it was also quoted by an OPPO employee that they have only purchased a Blu-Ray license for research purposes, but have no plans or obligations to build, let alone produce, a Blu-Ray player anytime soon (somehow, I think this is their way of saying "don't ignore the 983!")

Time will tell...

Cheers,

Dan

Does DSD --> PCM conversion make an audible difference in this price range?

I'm still listening to everything in PCM, but several people on this site are referring to Direct DSD vs. DSD-->PCM as day and night...

For those who have witnessed Direct DSD and are interested in the 983 should prepare for somewhat of a disappointment in the SACD playback department if the sound difference is truly that remarkable.

Hi everyone,

For those who are interested, I will be visiting OPPO headquarters again tomorrow and I will be testing both DVD and SACD playback between the brand new 983 ($399) and last years 980 ($169).

Because the 983 cannot process DSD direct due to it's chip (unlike the 980 which can), I will be spending most of my time inspecting DVD picture quality. I will report back here over the weekend as to whether or not the $399 price tag is justified by my findings.

Last time I was there, they still only had a 2-channel setup for audio and a 32-42 inch HDTV for video demonstrations.

If you'd like me to ask particular questions or obtain special info regarding the 983 on your behalf, please send me an e-mail or post a reply to this thread.

Cheers,

Dan

Dan

Not directly related to the 983 but can you find out if their Blu-Ray models will also include SACD playback?

Thanks

John
