By the way, I received my copy of Herreweghe's account yeserday. On first hearing it is fairly typical of recent recordings by Haitink and P. Jarvi, although probably less forceful and certainly not as fast as Jarvi. In common with many other recordings of the Beethoven symphonies I thought the orchestra too large.
Could you say whether Manze's Eroica is similar to Paavo Jarvi's, if you have heard both? I disliked the latter but am interested in Manze's.

Definitely not similar! Despite Jarvi using a chamber orchestra like Manze, the Bremen orchestra sounds bigger than the Helsingborgs. There is much more prominence given to the brass and timpani whereas Manze uses their weight with far greater finesse and variation. Throughout the symphony Manze achieves a better balance between the different orchestral sections, particularly fine is the woodwind, the principal oboe is delicious. Too often Jarvi's orchestral sound seems heavy, while Manze's is light, delicate and transparent with the heavyweight forces being used more effectively where needed. Tempi are more varied than Jarvi's, and Manze also sustains the musical lines far more effectively, reaching some glorious climaxes. Jarvi is often very fast, and I think too fast, Manze's Eroica recording is 5 minutes longer than Jarvi. The high speeds in Jarvi's account may sound exciting initially but they soon pall, and the reading becomes rather dull. I found Jarvi's account of symphonies 4 & 7 much better. Manze's reading of the Eroica is, to me, very involving, and I frequently want to sing or hum along with the music, à la Colin Davis. Comparing Jarvi and Manze in this symphony is rather like comparing chalk and cheese.

I'd be grateful for the recording date for this issue. I gather it isn't in the booklet, but hope someone will have inside info.

I'll answer my own question! (The info may be wanted by some who have this recording as the it's not in the booklet, so I'm told.)
The recording took place in Sweden in the Helsingborg Konserthus, Helsingborg and was completed 31/08/2007.
Actually, the info was requested by Eric Grunin, who I think has an interesting site at www.ericgrunin.com
