I thought the Oppo would be about the same price but of course, it costs more pounds (198) than dollars (169). Outrageous when you realize the exchange rate is 1.97:1. That translates the UK price into $390, far more than double the price!
EDIT: correction -- the price is EUR 198, not GBP 198. Still, that converts into USD 292, almost double the US price.

Oppo are far from the only company that treats the UK market with something approaching disdain. Sony, for example, market the PS3 with the "same" cost in both £ and $... As to how one could get round this or solve this huge bias against adoption of hi-resolution media in the UK, I would be welcome to suggestions.

We should acknowledge that pay and transport costs are much higher in the UK. Then there are VAT (sales tax) difference.
Even considering those, one can only assume that UK companies seek higher profit margins than their US counterparts. Perhaps because sales volumes are lower so they need to make a bigger profit on each unit to remain viable.
So we should not always just do a straightforward currency conversion.

Anyway, the point is, for UK buyers, we have a DSD feed into our Onkyo (and other DSD-equipped) receivers for a price worth investing in!
Now if only someone could confirm if Onkyo receivers go DSD->Analogue or DSD->PCM->Analogue.

All Onkyos below 805 circumvent direct DSD decoding for a process involving several steps, including a PCM conversion.
So get the 805 or above, and make sure you run "pure direct" mode (Yamaha terminology, sorry don't know what it is called in Onkyos) where the processor only applies room correction and equalization, leaving you with a seat in the recording studio.
Also at least three of us with Pio 600/48(US) players have had glitches with ability to pass multichannel DSD, others say it works, also the Pios have much slower response times to commands than the Oppo 980, FYI. Note that i have been a longterm Pio Elite fan (DV59 for a while) and have no personal interest in promoting Oppo. BTW CS shines at Oppo, they have real geeks on staff.

Does anyone here know which Pioneer receivers accept DSD via HDMI?

I put this question to Pioneer USA and they replied "Yes we have available on the VS94-VS91". I take it that means the VSX-91THX and the VSX94-THX, and knowning how the marketing managers in my own company always insisted on 'line logic' the VSX-92THX must have it too.
Now because the European range is very different I asked the same question to their EU headquarters in Belgium but no answer thus far. Does anyone know

The European models (also sold in Hong Kong) seem almost identical except the labels are VSX-LX50,60,70. The LX60,70 manual can be found on the Pioneer website and seems to suggest some difference between SACD multichannel processing for the 60 and 70 (SACD Direct vs Straight decoding)
