I had three Philips 1000 in the past, but they all failed. Your product is still working?
I'm carefully hanging on to my third one :-O
Shame about the poor mechanism really because the DAC board inside is fantastic. I'm afraid in 2008 I'll have to get myself a new player. Probably an Oppo.

Accuphase and DCS don't convert DSD stream to PCM but they're super expensive.

The oppo 980 universal player (about $160) sends DSD via HDMI to appropriately equipped receivers, so it's a welcome exception to Julien's rule (though I'll bet his rule applies most of the time). -Rob
There is no evidence that any of these receivers convert the DSD signal straight to analgoue, i.e. unless there is documentation to the contrary, we have to assume they go the DSD->PCM->Analogue route.
Of course, the advantage of this is that you can apply room ocrrection, i.e. Audyssey, to the signal, which in my opinion would give a better sound than an unadulterated DSD->Analogue signal. So it's all good. :-)
Which brings me onto what I would like from Sony in the New Year - a DSD output from the PS3 to feed into my Onkyo 805....pleeeeease.

NAD M55 does not downconvert to PCM. I just had this confirmed by NAD.

Have a look at the manuals for the better Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer and Sony receivers - they quite clearly have a "pure direct" mode for DSD, then a "direct" mode where their take on speaker/room calibration is applied (which, as you say, *is* good) and lastly the pseudo-"surround" modes (which are decidedly not for music)...
I'm sure other manufacturers follow a similar approach.

For Onkyo 805: Pure Mode means the video circuitry and receiver display is switched off (except the HDMI OSD display I believe) and no digital processing is done on the signal (apart from digital to analogue obviously*).
Direct Mode is same as Pure Direct but video and display left on.
*There is no proof - I have even checked in the Burr Brown DAC manual that is in the Onkyo - that the signal goes directly from DSD to Analogue. Unless anyone knows an engineer that has worked on the circuitry, or can get confirmation, then we cannot assume the Onkyo goes DSD to analogue directly. Mayeb it does, but no proof of this.

Not sure if this was a resposne to my post. If not, cool. If so, then I did say I know not of any receivers that go DSD->analogue directly. :-)

All Burr-Brown decoders (I think that one of these is used by Onkyo) that are currently on the TI website do not submit the DSD stream via PCM but all streams are put through some form of "Enhanced Multilevel Delta-Sigma Modulator" before a final D/A step.
Whether this is good, bad or a necessary step that all DSD converters would have I am not technically aware enough to comment (but I can read a flow chart!)

Please refer us to the relevant flowchart. I foudn the PDF fiel for the Burr Brown DACs used in the Onkyo, but I could not interpret the flowchart. There you go.

Which DAC is used?
