I have just signed the petition. How can anyone have confidence in SACD when there are all these tacky drives around? This issue is NEVER mentioned in magazine reviews. My player has a Philips drive that has big problems playing warped discs. It has spat SACDs out, and on one occasion froze the player, forcing me to power it off and on just to get the disc out. It has even rejected perfectly flat discs, only succeeding in reading them at the third or fourth attempt, sometimes (this "feature" appears to be disc-dependent). This is all such a great shame when SACD gives such a revealing insight into the music, beyond what even the best CD can achieve.

Precisely why I started the petition. Sadly, few seem interested in signing it. I did ask John Sunier of audaud.com to place it on their site and promote it but he seemed indifferent to it.

The trouble is that SACD is a sort of niche market for people who really appreciate sound quality, whose number are few. Really, it makes me wince when I hear these MP3 players on the train going to work. They sound like two skeletons jumping up and down on top of a tin roof!! Many younger people have never heard vinyl.

More than that, out of the people who do have an SACD, very few encounter transport problems. So no wonder hardly any people have signed the petition.

Most of the problems seem to occur with warped discs. I now check out flatness by loading them in my top-loader CD player (you can see the reflection!). In the case of CDs, you can make a flat copy of a warped disc in your computer DVD writer, and then it plays well. However, you cannot copy SACDs, so you have to send them back for a replacement; very annoying!

Are there any particular labels that have problem discs?
