Same here. Ordered George Benson DVD-A and "Best of ERA" SACD to get free shipping.

Thanks for the tip, FunkyMonkey!! My credit card company thank you as well. :D

If only I have a DVD-A player....Oppo 980, here I come....

Enough is enough already, folks. It's tiresome to see how quickly longtime members of this site move away from the thread topic again and again which I find exciting and is the true reason why we visit and post here - the music and the technology! Instead, so many of you whip yourselves into a frenzy over what ... how this site is supposed to cater to YOUR needs?

Look, if you care as much about experiencing this long out of print gem as I do, then click the link I created in the original post and order it before it's gone forever ... or you'll end up being the sucker who has to pay through the nose for it because you spent too much time bickering with flyingdutchman (don't give in to him - he loves it)

As for my last two cents regarding this format dispute, I just want to say that as wonderful as hi-res audio is, it is nice to have some video-based extras to go with the sounds, and that's the reward of owning a DVD-Audio disc. After doing careful research online before buying, I haven't made a bad DVD-A purchase yet, whereas with SACD, not only is the album all you get, but I have yet to be blown away by a stereo-only disc, of which there are far too many, in my opinion.

Long live SACD & DVD-Audio as long as they keep doing it in multichannel!!!

Cheers,

Dan

This site was made to cater to the needs of SACD lovers, not DVD-Audio.

SACD fans are not people who love SACD, but people who love great recordings of great music in high resolution

Julien, you naive post-war kid ;-)

Flyingdutchman, look, a SACD disc and it seems its superjewel case has slipped off revealing the shiny gold disc in all its glory...

Now while he's distracted, just want to ask, if I only have a DVD player, will I only get Dolby Digital with DVD-A's or is it 5.1 PCM, or is it DTS?

If you have a DVD-Video player you can only access the "Video" part of the disc (the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder) - this means that you can play audio tracks which are compliant with the DVD-Video standard: Dolby Digital, DTS and Stereo PCM up to 96KHz/24bit. Dolby Digital tracks are always available on the discs, DTS is available quite often, however PCM is quite rare on the DVD-Video section of a DVD-Audio disc.

The DVD-Audio section (the contents of the AUDIO_TS folder) can contain Stereo PCM/MLP up to 192KHz/24bit and 5.1 PCM/MLP up to 96KHz/24bit, but you will need a DVD-Audio player for playing these tracks.

Thanks.
This would suggest that only reason a PS3 doesn't read DVD-A is a software shortcoming whereby it is not programmed to read teh correct folders. Because after all, it is capable of reading and processing all other high resolution sound formats. Crying shame, these format wars!

It's not as easy as that. To play a DVD-A (the hi-rez part) it requires MLP decoder chips and a DVD-A license.

If that wasn't the case, many more DVD players would support the format, just like most of today's DVD players can read MP3 discs.

I don't know about the rest of the world but in Europe they now have a 40GB cheaper PS3 version which doesn't even support SACD anymore.
