Radio 3 CD review today...

Hi Peter

I guess R3 doesn't distribute its programmes in multi channel. But they do 2-channel in DAB distribution, if my memory serves me correctly.

Do you listen to DAB and can you feel DAB do justice to SACD 2 channel? Do you know what I think? I think BBC distributes the CD layer!

/Tommy

Well spotted, I missed this, it sounds like a good programme today. Did they actually refer to the SACD mixes and quality of sound? I find it frustrating that Gramophone more often than not makes no reference to the multi channel listening experience, which is so different to listening to the stereo mix.

Hello Tommy

When the BBC doesn't reduce its bitrates the DAB sound is just good enough for me and I think the sound does enough justice to SACD releases even though like you I suspect the RBCD layer is played. Even at its highest bitrate, DAB sound is less good than CD, though my tuner is a very early example. At lower bitrates I think the sound is quite poor; concerts broadcast under these conditions are quite difficult to listen to as the life seems drained out of the music - I'd rather put on a well transferred CD of some pre-war performance instead.

Of course, the SACDs themselves do sound hugely better than the DAB broadcast, but I can get enough impression of the performances to tempt me to buy!

Having said all that, Andrew McGregor is a great supporter of SACD, and CD Review gives it its due more most other magazines whether on radio, in print, or via the internet, and I do get a lot of pleasure from this programme. Andrew often describes the surround mix pointing out its differences from the stereo version.

All good wishes

Peter

The Lyrita Story - 12.15pm Sat 29 September 2007

After the CD Review programme on Saturday 29 September Radio 3 will be celebrating Lyrita’s achievements over the past half-century. Presented by Lewis Foreman, the programme will feature contributions from Lyrita’s producers and recording engineers and the label’s artists, including conductor Vernon Handley – alongside a rare new interview with Richard Itter himself.

In Australia, ABC Classic FM also broadcasts the CD layer of various classical SACDs and this is a good way to get to hear this part of a SACD if you are aware of this. ABC Classic FM can be listened to on the Internet and various past broadcasts can be replayed on the Internet.
