I'm not sure exactly what this is, but you can read about it here:

From a review published in the "Mennonite Quaterly Review":

"The Solitude Trilogy is a series of hour-long radio documentaries which Glenn Gould (1932-82) produced for the CBC. All three deal with themes of deliberate withdrawal from the world. The first program, "The Idea of North" (1967), is a journey into solitude, through the metaphor of Northern geography and climate. "The Latecomers" (1969) is a study of the isolation of Newfoundland. And "The Quiet in the Land" (1977), Gould's own favorite of the three, is a portrait of Mennonite life: the identity of a community of faith within a broader society.

All three programs are not so much documentaries as compositions in Gould's unique genre of "radio as music." In each, Gould manipulates taped interviews and sound effects into a complex dramatic montage: often two or three characters are speaking simultaneously, illuminating different aspects of Gould's themes. This intense texture stretches the ear and mind beyond normal expectations of comprehensibility, and can be perplexing at first. Repeated listening, however, reveals remarkable depth and subtlety."

this is NOT the "solitude trilogy" - it is a trilogy of biographical programmes made recently by gould's german biographer michael stegemann for german radio station WDR.

they were specifically made for broadcast in multichannel surround-sound format, though there will also be a stereo layer on the SACD issue.

the programmes, originally in german, have been re-recorded in an english version for release to english-speaking territories.

they use a combination of collage-type sonic techniques with straight narrative commentary to trace gould's life and recordings.

i have heard the programmes (in stereo only) and they are certainly fascinating. i imagine many gould fans will want to investigate.

Interesting... But I wonder why the description mentions "The Idea of North“, "The Latecomers“, "The Quiet in the Land“, the three parts of the Solitude Trilogy?

i gather stegemann took the "solitude trilogy" as a point of reference and inspiration for his own programmes. they are actually mentioned only very briefly in stegemann's script.

i THINK i'm right in saying you can still get hold of gould's "solitude trilogy" on CD if you hunt around for it on the internet. i've never heard it, and would like to.

Yes, the Solitude Trilogy is available on Amazon or directly from the CBC:

zeus and others please note - the listing under the cover photo for this item is wrong.

see my comments above - this is NOT glenn gould's OWN "solitude trilogy", but an entirely new set of 3 biographical programmes made for german radio ABOUT him, and in multichannel (as well as stereo).

the three programmes named in the listing here are the titles of gould's original 3 "solitude trilogy" programmes, which are nothing to do with this new sony issue.
