Hello Robert,

Ok, reading Teresa's post, I will add my two cents worth! My most recent listening included the Freddy Kempf solo disc that included Moussorgsky's Pictures. WOW, what a wonderful recording. Mind you, solo piano is not my most favorite genre, but I have to absolutely rave about this one! Kudos to Freddy Kempf and Kudos to BIS!

In keeping with the previous post, now that I have your attention....

BOY would I love to see the complete symphonies of Carl Nielsen on BIS. If not the complete, well #1 certainly and #3 and #4 perhaps later. There is less need for the fifth since it has at least one good SACD already. Nielsen's violin concerto also comes to mind as something that would be really nice.... hmmm, pairing the violin concerto with the symphony #1 would make a really nice disc.

Transfer from another thread. Question was: does a label sell even 10'000 copies of a new SACD or words to that effect. Answer:

Even? EVEN?????
To sell 10'000 of any classical album world-wide is a GREAT result for a classical label, not that often achieved. If achieved, it has far more to do with the artists and music than the medium, on which it is presented.
But you're right in one way. Strictly speaking an orchestral SACD has to sell in that region to break even, especially if sold at the same price as a RBCD. At BIS, we're relying on a back catalogue, which goes back 35 years (we never delete anything) to support the largely loss-making SACD investment of today. We would be financially much better off without SACD. However, we cherish our customers and want to give them the best.
We would have liked to see, however, the SACD community appreciate this slightly more, that I must say.

Best - Robert

Robert, if it makes you feel any better, before SACD-era I had exactly zero BIS cds. Now I have a dozen, all of them SACDs.

All the best,
kristian

About a year ago, I carefully reviewed my small SACD collection and came to the conclusion that BIS is the one company that consistently does everything right. If a performance is released on BIS, then I know that somebody with good musical judgment believes in that piece of music and believes that the performer can do it justice.

Moving onto sound quality: your stereo mixes are the best in the business. Orchestras are so well-balanced that I can hear all the musically important lines with ease. Other companies that use a more "purist" mixing style sometimes achieve a more striking beauty of instrumental color, but the BIS approach is the right one. Even the RBCD layers are mastered with very little degradation compared to the SACD stereo versions. And the multichannel mixes (what I've heard of them) are even better!

I decided that I can buy BIS with confidence regardless of format and promptly purchased the Brautigam Mozart and "Essential Sibelius" boxes. More recently, I wouldn't have given the Uljas Pulkkis a second thought if it were on any other label, but I listened to part of it on my school's Naxos Music Library subscription, and it is now at the top of my wishlist. What better show of appreciation can you hope for from the SACD community?

Robert,

I count 40 BIS sacd's in my library with a couple more on order, the most of any single label in my collection. You keep making them and I'll keep buying them! Could you possibly interest one of your fantastic pianists in an uncut Tchaikovsky 2nd concerto? All the best.

If the tenor of the latest 4 or so posts is anything to go by, I was wrong. Rarely have I been so happy to be wrong!!

Thank you for the encouraging words - they're needed - best - Robert

Robert,

Any chance that future releases in the Valen series will be on sacd? Thanks.

BIS has always had great sounding recordings, combined with spendid performances, long before SACD. Blue chip label from the start.

I just did a count and came up with 21 - primarily the Beethoven of Vanska and Brautigam, the Grieg series, and a few others. It would be nice to see more from Vanska and Minnesota - Beethoven orchestral works, for example. Anyway, as someone mentioned, we'll keep buying them, Robert.

No, sorry. I am still sweating bullets that we undertook this cycle at all.

Don't worry about that. Given the quality of both the performers and our sound/production, this co-operation is there to continue.
Stephen Paulus: 'To Be Certain of the Dawn', oratorio, will be out in Feb and we will record at least the Bruckner 4, everything, of course, in SACD Surround.
