Are there any plans to release an SACD featuring "Classical Favourites" or a similar programme? It is frustrating to see that a number of popular classical pieces have not been recorded in multi-channel or are not even available on SACD stereo. I am thinking of "Les Preludes" (Liszt), "Kamarinskaya" (Glinka), "Freischütz" overture (Weber), "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" (Mendelssohn), Rosamunde (Schubert), Concerti a due cori (Handel), Karfreitagszauber (Parsifal, Wagner), Romanian Rhapsodies 1 and 2 (Enesco), "Orphée aux enfers" overture (Offenbach), etc. Ballet favourites with music by Adam, Gounod, Massenet and Delibes would also be a good idea.

Of course, I do not know if such a project would be convenient and fit in with your own plans. But I would happy to see at least one or two of the pieces mentioned on one of your SACDs.

i can ad

Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky
Capriccio Italien op. 45 (there is an xrcd recording which is very good --
RCA Victor SO, Kondrashin),

and

KODÁLY, Zoltán Psalmus hungaricus,
Marosszék Dances, Galánta Dances

to the classical favourites list.

Lots of recordings of Capriccio Italien already on SA-CD (do a search) including Gatti's impressive Tchaikovsky interpretations ... though I haven't heard the particular disc in question. Also a number of recordings of Kodaly's Galanta Dances.

Also, for the Enescu Romanian Rhapsody No. 1:

Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies, Enescu: Roumanian Rhapsody - Dorati
Rhapsodies - Stokowski

thank you zeus. i made a mistake when looking for the title
Capriccio Italien in the homepage www.sa-cd.net. (i looked for
the expression italian capriccio instead of looking for capriccio
italien.) i am pleased to learn that there are at list 6 different
recordings. thank you once again.

I am transferring these thoughts from the Zander's Mahler 1st thread where as observations they do stand on their own. But here they may go somewhere desirable.

Zander's Mahler series seems dead in the water.

I responded with:

"The competition is pretty fierce. Everybody seems to want to record Mahler's symphonies on SACD."

Bartok's concerto for orchestra as well. Pity, there is a lot of Bartok unrecorded, like the 2nd violin concerto which on evidence of a live stream I heard from Radio Suisse Romande, would have been really well served by Ms. Fischer, the OSR and Marek Janowski. PentaTone missed a REAL winner there!

So now JF is out of the SACD sweepstakes, BUT I am wondering what Gluzman, Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic would make of that Bartok. Simply to be supportive, I purchased their Tchaikovsky/Glazunov disc on BIS weeks ago - somehow, I have yet to listen to it.

Again, another place where the competition is fierce! Already owning and throughly enjoying JF's accounts of these on PentaTone, I am hard put to scrape up enough enthusiasm for the new disc even to put it on.

But had it been the Bartok 2nd violin concerto, I'm sure I would have played the thing 10 times already! I guess the same would be said of the Dvorak, the Elgar, (Hilary Hahn has a recording which I think is still easily obtained out but she didn't impress me as owning the thing like JF did the Tchaikovsky and to a slightly lesser extent the Glazunov.)

Sibelius is another candidate for a really fine recording. Suwanai (now out of print and becoming hard to get) is OK, like Hahn is OK in the Elgar, there is lots of room left there, and also with the Shostakovitch #1 as well. I think there is plenty of room with the Beethoven for a new recording as well.

Sigh, I guess it's time to climb down from the soapbox now!

As long as we're up on the Soapbox of Wishful Thinking, perhaps you'd listen 10 times to Annar Follesø play Bartók's OTHER greatest work -- Bartók: Violin Sonatas - Annar Follesø is fantastically beautiful Bartók!

I haven't been counting actually but I am sure I've listened to it more than ten times. Follesø would, on strength of this sonatas disc, be an excellent candidate for the violin concerto! My only reservation would be that if 2L were to record it we would have the typical wrap around circus for the MCH version. Otherwise it would be superb, I am sure. Wish I had the money to sponsor such a thing thus ensuring a concert hall perspective.

If 2L actually were to record it with Follesø however, and even if my worst fears were realized regarding the wrap around circus for MCH, I know I would purchase it and listen in STEREO! - which as definitely is not my wont.

But in this post, I was hinting to Robert von Bahr, not Morten.

And here's your reply:

no, we haven't any plans for Bartók's 2nd, but we have big plans for Gluzman with other repertoire that I think will be most welcome - and I am not talking about the big classics now. More later.

In the meantime - have you tried Aho's 12th Symphony "Luosto" in Surround? If not, you are a happy man, since you've got something to look forward to!

Best - Robert

Robert,

I don't know about Bruce, but "Luosto" has been in my player over and over again since it arrived. It's sensational. Thank you.
