ps I wasnt bickering.

I seem to have a problem with my typing - I keep meaning to type "raffells" and type "raffels" instead. Sorry about that. (I had to correct myself carefully even when typing the name again just then!)

I accept you weren't bickering. Bickering is a collective activity. WE were bickering, both of us. And my comment was an example of British-style self-deprecation.

As to the rest of your post - see Windsurfer's post in response and my addition to that.

Can we get back to Bis and its plans and repertoire? There seem to be some very interesting projects in the pipeline both for you and for me.

Dear Robert.

Among your April news is the first of three in a complete orchestral music traversal by the Norwegian Fartein Valen. The short violin concerto is a miracle in my view and it is included in this first release. The tone poems are pretty wonderful too and Valen is proof, if such is needed, that you can write beautiful music with a 12-note technique. Great news this.

Sad news: No SACD's. Why? This music is already available in excellent performances on RBCD.

Best, Thomas

The disc containing the Beethoven 1st & 3rd piano concertos looks very interesting.
The only Andrew Parrott I know is the period instrument conductor who recorded JS Bach, Purcell etc for EMI.
So, BIS is recording 'historically informed' Beethoven concertos with Brautigam, and perhaps a more romantic rendition later with Sudbin?

Yes, that's about right, if Sudbin's version with Osmo Vänskä can be labelled "romantic".

I will come with more info about some rather interesting releases shortly.

Will that include information on a the Sibelius "killer" disc that was mention almost a year ago ?

Robert

Can we expect any Messiaen from BIS in this anniversary year? Some of the organ works from Aarhus with Simon Preston, for instance. Or a Turangalila from Singapore. And in SACD please.

Nice to hear a new Sudbin disc is coming. But I think there are so many recent Beethoven PC´s that we are drowning already.

How about some Medtner solo works or maybe a Haydn piano concerto? Or Brahms 1st PC?

Dear Mahlerei,

no, sorry. And the "Sibelius Killer Disc" also awaits its turn in the queue.

But there are some that ARE released:

The 4 first (that is, last released) in the BIS list (go to "Titles", select BIS) are indeed released and generally available.

The van Beethoven Concertoes 1+3 with Ronald Brautigam is absolutely phenomenal. One sits with a great big smile that gets broader and broader.

And what will come to me tomorrow is the real surround killer:

BIS-SACD-1676 Kalevi Aho: Symphony No 12.
Written for 2 Lap joik soloists and 2 orchestras, it was premièred on a mountainside in Finnish Lapland (sic!), which incorporated the natural echoes into the composition.
Listening to the opening, with 4 percussionists coming from everywhere, simply raises my neck hairs and the rest is Aho at his considerable best. What a performance! What music!!! WHAT SOUND!

Best - Robert

Well, I'm definitely getting the Aho SACD. Good to see his symphonies starting to appear on SACD.

Robert

I don't know any Aho but that sounds unmissable. Thanks for the heads up.
