PS I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if the Elgar cello concerto were next to emerge.

Plus one

I haven't gone through all the pages so the question may already have been put: May we expect a Nielsen violin concerto?

It would be great to have a set of the Liszt orchestral tone poems on BIS SACD's. Pretty please...

One more vote for that!

Bissie, will there be a Mozart piano concertoes /Brautigam/ box? My option is to buy them when they are available as multichannel downloads.

BTW I read a fairly negative review of the latest release in this series in the June issue of Gramophone. I've subscribed to that magazine since the late 80's. But for the last year or two I seem to rely more on what some very knowledgeable people are writing, very informatively, here at sacd.net.
And thanks to you!

I relied on Gramophone and the Penguin Guide when I started out collecting, but I dispensed with them years ago, having come to trust my own judgement. Many professional reviewers seem to regard the recordings they heard in their youth (usually in the '50s or '60s) as a Platonic ideal to which later recordings can only approximate. Well, I suppose that's how our brains are formed. I still measure all recordings of Prokofiev's Fifth—the first symphony I fell in love with—against the first I heard (Muti's with the Philadelphia Orchestra, which was indifferently received by the critics) and usually find them wanting.

Yes, I actually saw that review only yesterday (am in Rotterdam at Classical:Next) and was rather surprised - that wasn't how Roland's Mozart records are usually met. However, I have learned that there is no future in arguing with a reviewer about taste, however much I disagree. AND I DO!

I cannot say with certainty, but we have been known to package complete cycles eventually, so the likelihood that this will happen is rather good. When is another matter entirely.

I cancelled my Gramophone subscription a couple of months ago after 40 years. I felt review standards had dropped too far and no longer reflected my tastes.

Well, I used to review classical records myself during some 15 years - a great way to get records for free! - for a Swedish daily (Göteborgs-Posten). I mainly wrote about opera but also orchestral music, choral works et cetera.
I just looked through my clippings from that time and it seems that the 20-ish BIS records I reviewed in average got 4 stars (actually lighthouses) out of 5, and there are also a number of 5's. The exception was a horrible Christmas cd by Yoshikazu Mera which I hope got big in Japan.
My first BIS review was the Icelandic composer Tomasson's opera Gudrun's 4th song; a sort of follow-up to Götterdämmerung (Gudrun = Gutrune). My last was obviously Katarina Karneus' recording of Mahler's orchestral songs (got a 5).

It is truly horrible, and, yes, it was a huge success in Japan.

I was a subscriber to Gramophone for about 30 years but I stopped my subscription as I was totally frustrated at the way the deteriorating quality of the album reviews. I was frustrated by what seemed to be the shorter length of them, they lacked any real depth, but more importantly the more SACDs I bought the more I wanted to know about that aspect of them. I got increasingly annoyed and frustrated that here were record companies, such as BIS and others, investing in SACD because they wanted to present their artists and music in the highest quality sound and their engineers would put much effort into creating a multichannel mix, only for all of this to be totally ignored in the reviews. So what was the point. I know from listening to discs that listening in SACD and in multichannel changes the listening experience completely, at least it does for me, and I wanted to read what the reviewers thoughts were and that they should respect the effort and commitment made by these companies to bring us recordings at their best. I wrote and told and them what I thought and never really got a satisfactory reply and was even ignored on occasions, so sadly, after decades of subscribing I decided to cancel it. I now really on the reviews and forums here to know what others think of new recordings.
