The above two posts offer excellent advice. Unless you are a die-hard stereo-only listener, do go for a MC player as it leaves you the flexibility to add to rather than replace should you want t go the MC route.

If you need a new pre-amp and amp as well, do consider the Linn Unidisk SC as it's an excellent universal player with its own pre-amp. And it plays CDs very well, too!

What about something like the Sony SCD-XA9000ES? That looks like a good quality audio only multi-channel player. Anyone with experience of that?

I have had one for about two years now and I am very happy with it!

I bought a fairly high end multi-channel SACD player (over £2000) and listened in stereo to SACDs for over a year, until I could afford to buy a multi-channel amplifier and extra speakers.

This is probably the best advice. Once you get into the top tiers -- Linn, Esoteric, Ayre, Aero, Musical Fidelity, etc. -- there really isn't that much audio quality difference between stereo-only players vs. ones that play multichannel, and that way you can always add multichannel later, and you will still have excellent stereo.

Also, once you get into that tier, a lot of those players which are universals allow you to turn off the video circuitry altogether, rendering your worry about whether or not that will have any effect on the sound moot. You may want to specifically look for that feature in your player.

As to my own opinion as to the stereo redbook/stereo DSD/multichannel DSD argument -- I'm mostly a headphone listener, so I get most of my SACD's for their stereo layer. Though I agree that I'd rather have an excellent separate redbook player to play my CD's on, than a universal player that plays them with mediocrity. And unfortunately, a lot of them do. (It's funny that someone mentioned a Denon 3910 and a Rega Apollo, as those are exactly the two highest end players that I have. I'll have to A/B them.)

Unfortunately the Ayre and Musical Fidelity are stereo only.

Anybody have any comments or opinion on the Denon DVD1930 & DVD2930 players compared to the Marantz DV7001?
