Are your speakers not full range? IF that is the case you can set your system up to put the bass into the speakers you mark as "large" and set the subwoofer up to service THEM rather than the .1 channel. You will have much better results with the Channel Classics and PentaTones and should have equal results with the others. In classical music, there is little or no reason for a .1 channel and most companies recording such are using 5.0 Certainly the best companies - BIS, PentaTone, Channel Classics and I believe Telarc etc. - are exclusive to 5.0. What that does for existing .1 channel discs I am afraid is another question.
Yes, they are. Mine are the JBL E80s/E35 front/center and the compatible JBL surround speakers(also full range) and I have set all my speakers to large. My subwoofer is the HSU VTF-3. The .1 does make an audible difference, a recent example being the Eschenbach Zemlinsky Lyric that uses the .1 very well.
Many of the Decca SACDs(Gergiev's Shostakovich #7,etc.) , sound less appealing when the sub is switched off, and all bass channeled to the front speakers. I cannot imagine the Chailly Turangalila in 5.0. Even though the bass is more spread around in 5.0, I prefer my SACDs 5.1 and will hesitate to buy a 5.0 unless it is the Living Stereo series. The only caveat is that I find myself adjusting the sub level to blend in with the main channels every time I switch recordings. In general, I have found that DG recordings need their .1 more enhanced than Deccas. I do not feel the need to adjust the settings for the Pentatones or Telarcs for the reason you mentioned.
On the other hand, I am happy that I went in for full range speakers instead of a satellite-sub configuration that I was considering at one point. Full range speaker configurations happily accomodate differing standards for surround SACDs.
