How are the singers? (I just loved the Kent Nagano Mahler 8th until the tenor came in!)
Thanks,
Bret

Well, after listening to this set through a couple of times illustrates the dangers of just flitting about for favourite highlights. As a whole it is a very warm and convincing reading with a few minor blemishes (not entirely unexpected for this gargantuan score!) Hänssler look to have given us yet another mighty choral epic.

The sound is unquestionably first rate - it quite supersedes anything you'll have heard on any other medium.

I am having trouble taking this one out of the player (but I must because my family needs the sleep!)

thanks P, i'm off to purchase!

I don't think it's officially due out until July or August.

I am in the lucky position of having been sent one for reviewing. Sorry but you'll just have to wait a while longer - it's worth it!

Thanks for the detailed review.

John:
Much impressed by your detailed review. BTW, is this 5.1 SACD? I read a review of the Fischer Joseph's Legende and enthusiastically imported it, only to find it to be a 5.0, a fact not mentioned anywhere in the review nor on the product web-page. Though the sound was very good I did miss the sub channel.

Are your speakers not full range? IF that is the case you can set your system up to put the bass into the speakers you mark as "large" and set the subwoofer up to service THEM rather than the .1 channel. You will have much better results with the Channel Classics and PentaTones and should have equal results with the others. In classical music, there is little or no reason for a .1 channel and most companies recording such are using 5.0 Certainly the best companies - BIS, PentaTone, Channel Classics and I believe Telarc etc. - are exclusive to 5.0. What that does for existing .1 channel discs I am afraid is another question.

http://www.2l.no/ often releases 5.1 recordings and that label do make very good SACDs.
