Yes and I think it is delightful, but being a "no nothing", I am probably reacting to the wonderful music Schubert wrote and enjoying it more than ever before because of the superb sound provided by PentaTone. Ahh well, such is life!

The views are on the views themselves, so please let those views stay in that thread. One thread is enough.

what i'm interested in is opinions on this new schubert disc. that's why i raised the question on a fresh schubert disc thread.

I concur. This is a great sounding disc and I really enjoyed the music making as well. Thanks Pentatone!

I was planing to write a review of this. Almost passed on it because I have a number of versions of this music on CD as well as two on SACD (the Praga and Capriccio releases). I was not at all happy with the Guraneri Trio on Praga (dull performances with only average sound quality). The Haydn Trio Eisenstadt were somewhat better in both performance and sound. Well, I am glad I bought this disc. It contains great performances and great sound! I also feel that way about this group's Beethoven Trios recording (which I haven't reviewed). Reagrdless of what some may think, I think this trio plays fabulously and this Schubert release is a great showcase for their talents. That's my 2 cents.

Regardless of what I wrote on the other thread about the players, I heard a bit of this recording in multi-channel and the soundstaging and sound quality were amazing. I expect to be one of the only people disturbed by the performances, so don't be influenced by my opinion. They are a very serious trio that plays very well together and work hardly on every recording.

But what is the opinion of the "two of three" who did NOT recommend this disc?

I am a huge fan of the Haydn Trio of Eisenstadt in these works. To me they just get inside the music better than anyone, SACD or redbook. The Guarneri Trio was dull by comparison. (Unfortunately I've found just about everything I've heard by them to be rather dull--the only chamber ensemble recorded on Praga that I haven't really liked.)

How does the new disc stack up? Well, I've only listened closely once, so time may change my opinion, but while better than the Guarneri they still don't measure up to the MQE in my book. Admittedly they are trying to do something different. But to me they don't really seem to have teeth: there is such angst--even despair, poignancy, and ultimately joy in the little things in life shown in these works; that's why I buy nearly every new version that comes out. Unfortunately the Storioni glosses over the emotional world, and to me plays them almost as if they were by Mozart (there's emotion there too, but of a different kind).

A nice second view, but not one I'll come back to vey often.

I agree. I didn't hear much emotional deepness in their playing either. But apparently we still don't have the two that do not recommend the disc, since it is neither Arthur nor me.
