I just got this. I have to say it's an immesely enjoyable piece of music...a couple reviews say this one is better than the DG. Considering that one is available for like, under $10 shipped used at Amazon, hopefully this was the better choice, but I'll probably never know...

But anyway, mine came with the booklet just /sitting/ there, freefloating. Not glued, or even any sign it was supposed to be glued. Anyone else get it like this?

Yes - slightly strange indeed.

I also have just over 200 SACD's and this is my worst, a real dud.
How can somebody give it 5 * is beyond me.

You don't say how/why you find it a dud - without knowing that, how can anyone possibly respond (politely) to your statements?

I bought an SACD hoping that it would better my Rudolf Kempe/Dresden Staatkapelle RBCD. I took into consideration that at the time the review on this site gave it 5 *. Well it did not come up to expectation sonically and performance wise. Sonically it is my worst SACD, the sound is unattractive and has a greyness to it
which is not a Channel classics characteristic.
The performance is just plodding along and uninspired, it certainly does nothing for me. (Compared to the Kempe) You could say that it is just a matter of tastes, but I know a few people that have exactly the same opinions.

You are not comparing like with like.

The Kempe CD recording is of the Symphonic Fragment - 25 minutes of excerpts from the work, not the complete ballet that lasts almost 65 minutes on Fischer's recording.

I would venture that your implied dislike of the music has coloured your view of the performance (2*!).

I can detect no distortion in the sound anywhere on this disc.

Could you please provide a track number and timing where you find something really objectionable with the SQ? I haven't listened to it in years, but I recall it being excellent.

Also, it may not be first-rate R. Strauss, but I rather have a rarely performed/recorded Strauss work then yet another recording of Ein Heldenleben or Eine Alpensinfonie.

This was the reason I bought the Channel Classic, as I wanted to listen to the whole ballet but unfortunately I found the whole thing boring.
Maybe it is due to the fact that when Kempe did the 25 minutes version they realised that it was better this way.
I did not mention distortion I said that the sound had a grayness quality that other disc by the same label do not have.

As has been pointed out, I've never met a CC recording I didn't like--- but there have been works which haven't boiled my water. I think this disc is well recorded and well played--- But it isn't Strauss' best work, and any grey quaulity is more a function of that. However I find it interesting enough to take out once in a while. I'd advise anyone not familiar with the work to listen to multiple segments on Amazon.
